@Akrazia kneed the dough more. The wetter the dough the more knnedin it talke to get it to stop sticking.

I'm broadly opposed to the use of "terrorism," including in compounds like "domestic terrorism," but I will say this:

"vandalism" is done with stuff like spray paint. When something is done with guns, it becomes something different from vandalism.

@mtrkdjoyce WRT Terrorism, yes! This is a rhetorical process I see over and over: 1) Use a tragic event like Sept. 11 to imbue a label with huge amounts of negative emotional energy. 2) Expand the reach of that term to cover everyone we don't like.

Have you tried following someone and it says "pending"?

In theory this is meant to only happen when someone has manual follower approval switched on. If they have it switched on, there will be a padlock 🔒 next to their name on their profile.

However, "pending" may also happen if servers are overwhelmed and your request is in a long queue, or there is some kind of technical fault.

Don't assume someone is rejecting your follow if you see "pending". They might not even know it is happening.

@Jake_Vig may I ask broadly what part of the world you are from? I'm from California, and something I am aware of every time I've been on the East Coast is that letting people merge is not part of the driving culture back there. In SoCal where I grew up, if someone needed to merge into your lane you made a hole for them so they didn't end up causing a traffic jam.

The “thank you wave” after letting someone merge their car in front of yours is the only thing holding this fragile society together.

#ScreenReader #accessibility question: Is there a screenreader-friendly way to emphasize text on Mastodon? I recently learned that my usual capitalization of the entire word can be problematic because some programs will read out all-caps words letter by letter. Using bold text has been recommended, but bolding doesn't seem implemented consistently across Mastodon. What is the least disruptive way to call attention to a specific word in a post here?

Thank you in advance for any guidance!

@michaelgemar @TGMetsFan98 We know that they are running the current generation below the hoped for chamber pressure in order to get Starship off the ground. I suspect that we will see a number of tests to destruction as McGregor attempts to find the safe upper limit and iterates on the design. Merlin went through a similar process.

@TGMetsFan98 That green is surely the tell-tail sign of engine rich combustion. 😜

When I came over to #mastodon and introduced myself a few weeks ago, a couple of people I didn’t know made me feel very welcome.

To anyone who has just arrived— it’s gonna be ok. We have blankets, hot chocolate, furry animals, and a crackling fire. Make yourself at home.

Every GOP official, especially party leaders like Kevin McCarthy, should be asked, wherever they go, whenever they appear, whether they condemn Trump’s call for termination of “all rules, regulations and articles, even those found in the Constitution” so that Trump can now be declared the winner.
They must utterly reject and walk away from this seditious, authoritarian madman. Now.

@alex_galt @cdarwin In theory that was what McClatchy was doing -- buying up local papers in order to create economies of scale. What actually happened was that they gutted the local news room and replaced most of the content with national and regional news.

@cdarwin you asked, "How does the blesséd survive?"

The answer is that national and super regional publications like the New Your times, SF Chronicle, or Washington Post along with specialty publications like the Wall Street Journal or The Atlantic have a large enough subscriber bast (for now) to continue to operate. Localized media does not.

The subscription model has some real drawbacks. A subscription is a payment for delivery of content. In a would where content is no longer a scarce comedy the value of a subscription falls below the cost of production.

We need to switch to a model where content is made available and we ask people to support local journalism. I think if local coverage is to recover it will need a funding model that looks far more like public media than subscriptions.

@hiitslissy @tralinda@mastodon.social @Plaer1 @Dahlialith I worked in the non-profit community services space before the pandemic. We were effected primarily by city council and count board of Supervisors decisions which received very little professional coverage.
