@gwensnyder I would suggest that for those who where here before Elon Musk got involved with twitter (and who are majority of the large and influential instance owners) being The Next Place is actually NOT what they want. That is a projection by us twitter emigrants.

Elon Musk dehumanizing LGBTQ people

@xs4me2 regulated by who exactly and under what authority? There is not a world wide government but Twitter is global. If you say it is a US company than it would be the Federal Government of the United States -- a government bound by the first amendment and the Skokie precedent. A US regulator would be obliged to allow any speech on the platform they control that they would have to allow in any public square, which is just about all of it.

I'm delighted by all the goodies and benefits I happened into on mine here at qoto. The starting text block is at 64K, which is huge in comparison to most, for example. The description page at qoto.org/about/more will give you a rundown, and I think you'll be pleased and surprised by the list of features.

Despite the recent enormous surge in activity and memberships, the server is still speedy (as is the administration). I've had zero trouble with any unpleasant characters lurking about. The management is pro-active in handling issues quickly. The underlying reason for its existence is as a science and science education instance, so there are many intelligent and well-spoken folks about.

Even though there are now over 25,000 users, the admin is reachable and responsive.

Hope you check us out!

@antares The first sitting world leader to go into space was Russian President Yuri Andropov, who flew aboard the Soyuz T-6 spacecraft in 1983. Before him, several other politicians and government officials had traveled to space, including U.S. Senators Jake Garn and John Glenn, who flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1985 and 1998, respectively. However, Andropov was the first head of state to fly into space while in office.

@jblxdesign Would it be that much different than landing George W. Bush on an air craft carrier to proclaim "mission accomplished."

President Theodore Roosevelt was the fist US President to fly in an airplane in 1910 just 4 years after the Wright Brothers first flight. Who do you think the first sitting world leader to make it into space?

She peeked over the edge of the bed.
"Are you still there?" she whispered.
The monsters under the bed did not reply.
"There is an elf on my shelf."
Silence.
"It watches me, and reports to Santa."
A hoarse growl came under the bed:
"Turn the light off."
She smiled.
"Thank you."

@georgetakei Well he Just left Sna Jose about 109 minutes ago so maybe on to a different project? Oh, wait was I not supposed to know that? (tag: @elonjet )

CNN, WaPo, NYT journalists' accounts were restored. The Intercept and independent journalists were not. We've gotten the worst of it all: the criticism of being the “mainstream media” but without the backing or protection of being the “mainstream media.”

@QasimRashid independent coffee shops need to organize around a single order-ahead app. Something like an uber for cafés. The biggest draw for Starbuck for me right now is not having to wait to order then wait more for my drink. (Well that and no being out of things all the time. 👋Pete's Coffee)

For all you lovely people who liked and boosted my fountain picture, here's another shot of it with added location.

Protip for the new mastodonians: don't obfuscate names or words - only hashtags work for search so you won't get troll bombed if you say Elon Musk.

Filters, however, work on anything, so those who don't want to see Elon Musk won't see this post.

But if you write El*n M*sk they WILL see it, and that might make them mad, so don't do it okay? Let people use their filters.

@drcaberry an ideal wire offers no resistance, but I don't have any ideal wire in stock at the moment. 22 gauge copper wire in 0.016 ohms per ft.

Today's XKCD is an extremely addictive spaceship game. I helped test it, and by "helped" I mean "found ever more unusual ways to get helplessly stuck in things"

You know that Kai Ryssdal's account only echos Twitter, right? There is on original content here, nor does he read any replies.

boss: I don't want to use the full hour for this meeting

57 MINUTES LATER

boss: thanks everyone, I'll give you a little time back in your day

@tiffanycli It doesn't do much good to post links to a bot reposting from a suspended twitter account. there will not be anything there.

@johncarlosbaez Looks like even mathstodon has been declared social media non grata by Space Caligula.

@daveleeFT When doing verification, what criteria does this list use to qualify as a journalist?

@Raccoon I'm assuming that this is directed at my pronouns field.

I do have a regular set of pronouns that I use IRL, and a real name as well, but I have found that my interactions on social media are much better if I keep details like race, gender, ethnicity, etc private.

On the Other Site I simply didn't list pronouns, but found that on Mastodon choosing not to do so lead to a certain set of assumptions about how I would treat LGBTQ+ people so I found a way to acknowledge and support the sharing of pronouns while keeping mine anonymous.

I completely understand those who don't want to interact with anonymous accounts, but I don't think that can be said of one using the handle Rockstar Racoon.
