@freemo
can you please explain a little more how we can write in \(LaTex\) here in qoto.org? Can we write greek characters and they will show up?

@kofanchen @giorgiogilestro

Yes, true.
When I started using twitter (2006), no one cared much about these things. We used to share status updates, and that was about it. Then others arrived shared papers and notes, and all of that.
This is the bit I like about qoto.org. We can share papers, codes, and discuss about it. Like arXiv, except the discussions happen at the same time as in a social medium. Qoto also because it allows $\alpha$ style posting, I think.

@Marian__Kennedy @gem_abbott

Mastodon is part of , a universe of similar things that speak to each other. So, instead of a Mastodon instance, you can go to and find a home there. From there follow everyone around, 🙂
A way to find out these things is to check out fediverse.party

📣 For fellow Mastodon rookies - I understand that ‘favouriting’ things doesn’t amplify them to your followers in the way that ‘liking’ would have on Twitter

So if you want to share something, you need to ‘boost’ it

Trying to get my head round a different threshold for sharing things on here!

@giorgiogilestro

"Even if academic Twitter ends up largely moving to Mastodon, the big question is whether the general public will move there, too, allowing scientists to communicate with more than just each other. “When I tweet, I’m talking to my neighbor and the person in the grocery store and the teenager who is thinking about studying science in college,” Fiesler says. “That’s the beauty of scientists on social media"

has grown and will continue to expand on interest networks converging. The general members of the public will arrive, on the heels of journalists who cover stories. That phenomenon already happens.

@kensanata@octodon.social
A very good introduction to the world of . Excellent graphics!

@kkstuppy
Looks like a good measure as to how many people are leaving twitter but also would like to check back, 🙂

@Greta @neauoire
Your article connecting philology to our everyday conversation is wonderful! Saying what we mean and meaning what we say or write is ever so important. Which thought about Tagore did you want to highlight?

@jeremy
Important list. Perhaps worth considering similar lists for other professionals as well.

@alexanderhay@mastodon.social
Man, this is a good one!

@adamdavidson

You may want to tell the new requester who are not journalists that they can still follow accounts on journa.hosts from their _home_ instance, they do not have to necessarily post on journa.host with a journa.host account. After all, can be personalised to an extreme level, till the level of hosing one's own server instance of only one person!
Besides, you can only allow so many people on your server (after all, it's _your_ server)
🙂

@abde
Yup. 100%, perhaps need to gently direct them to other corners of fediverse.

@Ssweet
Great to know your interests Steve. Have you checked out bookwyrm? You can follow people on bookwyrm from this account and if you set up an account there, connect the two accounts, 🙂

@feditips @FediFollows @FediVideos @homegrown

I'd rather pay you that eight dollars than waste it on Muskverse, 😃

Like so many people on here, I'm an unpaid volunteer.

@jacob FWIW qoto.org has a quote tweeting function, so it's possible to implement in Fediverse even if it's not in the default feature set.

I think their codebase is open source, not sure if it's designed to be adopted by others, though. @freemo would know.

@abde
Some very interesting reflection. The is massive, any Mastodon instance is a small part of it. I am sure you will find members of your tribe. You can also follow twitter accounts and draw them here using beta.birdsite.live
You can build your personalised space in the fediverse. A bit like playing with blocks if you know what I mean.
🙂

1. Go to joinmastodon.com and look for servers with topics that interest you, or that have a lot of users. Go to those servers home pages and then follow the admin. That admin will likely boost interesting posts on that server, and as you follow people, your social graph will naturally expand into that server.

2. Go to search.twitter.com and run a search for "Mastodon." You'll find lots and lots of people posting links to their Mastodon profile. Follow anyone that interests you.
