Turns out there wasn’t a dramatic burst of biodiversity on Earth known as the Cambrian explosion. At least, that’s what Thomas Servais, a French paleontologist, and his colleagues argue in a 2023 paper. The Cambrian explosion is credited for being a period in which many animal groups sprang to life and diversified. Servais says that’s really the result of the biases of scientists. Humans have been using glass for more than 4,000 years, with some of the earliest uses being for decorative glass beads and arrowheads.
And it’s still fascinating researchers.
The best way to understand glass is to understand how it’s made.
We had two glass researchers explain what about glass’ properties make it so special:

Remember to turn on Notifications for prolific tooters like @pluralistic so you don't miss an interesting toot. Notifications is the secret to making your @Mastodon experience better in the absence of an algorithm.
@bibliolater Boosting is the only way to raise the profile of a toot. Favorites are basically a private communication btwn you and the other user. I mostly boost so others can see the message, too. Sometimes I evaluate the content of a toot and decide to favorite bc I like it but don’t boost bc I think it might be annoying or inappropriate for others. #BoostOrFavorite
A thread on the mutual admiration between French and Chinese elites in the 1700s -- and what brought it to an end. You can read the whole thing here:
#OTD 9 July 1755 The Braddock Expedition is soundly defeated by a smaller French and Native American force in its attempt to capture Fort Duquesne. Braddock's death allows George Washington to take command, boosting his military career.
@bibliolater really depends on the situation and both are ideal on their own or together. I personally approach these as: I like the post=favorite; I like the post+I would like others to see it=boost+like; I consider this important for a discussion=boost.
Considering the lack of algorithms that shows you “favourited” posts, boost is essential and should be prioritised imho.
@bibliolater i favourite "i managed to get out of bed today!", but i boost "look at this flower i've seen when i managed to get out of bed today!" 😁
@bibliolater I favorite, then I #boost.
Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro died #OTD in 1856.
In honor of Avogadro's contributions to molecular theory, the number of molecules per mole of substance is named the Avogadro constant, NA. It is exactly 6.02214076×10^23 mol−1. The Avogadro constant is used to compute the results of chemical reactions. It allows chemists to determine the amounts of substances produced in a given reaction to a great degree of accuracy. via @wikipedia
@bibliolater If you want to gain the post more visibility and publicity, boost it. Favs may not seen by all, depending on settings. so its better to #boost us to the #moon 😂

Mysterium Cosmographicum Johannes Kepler was published at Tübingen in late 1596 and in a second edition in 1621.
Kepler proposed that the distance relationships between the six planets known at that time could be understood in terms of the five Platonic solids, enclosed within a sphere that represented the orbit of Saturn. via @wikipedia

Which is better to #boost or to favourite? #Tips #Mastotips #Mastodontips #Feditips
Not a bot, just a rather corpulent male fifty years of age; a very, very slow ignoramus who reads occasionally.
Toots are #humanities, #science, #nonfiction, #book, #map, #chart and #graph related. Some toots containing #videos may also find their way into the timeline.
Toots or follows or boosts or mentions ≠ endorsements of any particular notion or notions.
Expect numerous typing errors and copious amounts of nonsensical commentary from my personal formulations.
Toots automatically delete after two weeks.
