@bibliolater @histodon @histodons I donโt believe Iโve seen that one before. Most interesting as it shows a community that is clearly not in danger of starvation or extinction. They were simply abandoned by the government of the day.

As a book lover (to perhaps an obsessive level, I admit), an ex-bookseller, writer (of hopefully reasonably accessible academic books) and a voracious reader, I find the results of this survey on reading depressing & disheartening.
Half of all adults in the UK do not read (books) for pleasure....
To some extent the age is unsurprising; I think people often rediscover books once the forced reading of school fades from memory; but even so....

What is not generally mentioned is that in essence the next president will be chosen by a small number of “swing states”. Nationwide polls may not be instructive as to what is happening in these states.

In 'What if?' scenarios I've heard before the US doesn't enter WW1. In real life that view was much closer than you would think. I never realized how dependent the UK were on J P Morgan, so much so that the US could dictate terms by 1917 according to this. #History #WhatIfHistory
