@bibliolater @histodon @histodons I donβt believe Iβve seen that one before. Most interesting as it shows a community that is clearly not in danger of starvation or extinction. They were simply abandoned by the government of the day.
π΄ A Dutch Confederate: Charles Liernur Defends Slavery in America
“The letters of Charles Liernur, a Dutch-born Confederate, provide a unique insight into the mind of an explicit supporter of slavery in an American context. How and why a Dutchman could defend slavery is the primary question this article addresses.”

π΄ Indians: Iamboulos and Diodoros on a utopian island beyond India (mid-first century BCE)
“Drawing on a source that claims to be a travelogue (perhaps really a fictional story or novel) by a person named Iamboulos (also transliterated Iambulus), Diodoros focusses on describing the marvels or paradoxes of the environment, animals, and peoples of this exotic landscape.”

As a book lover (to perhaps an obsessive level, I admit), an ex-bookseller, writer (of hopefully reasonably accessible academic books) and a voracious reader, I find the results of this survey on reading depressing & disheartening.
Half of all adults in the UK do not read (books) for pleasure....
To some extent the age is unsurprising; I think people often rediscover books once the forced reading of school fades from memory; but even so....

π΄ πΊπΈ Polls And The US Election 2024
It is curious that pundits and others use nationwide aggregate polls to show that their favoured candidate is leading and therefore will win the election in November. What is not generally mentioned is that in essence the next president will be chosen by a small number of “swing states”. Nationwide polls may not be instructive as to what is happening in these states.

In 'What if?' scenarios I've heard before the US doesn't enter WW1. In real life that view was much closer than you would think. I never realized how dependent the UK were on J P Morgan, so much so that the US could dictate terms by 1917 according to this. #History #WhatIfHistory
π΄ The fertility industry: profiting from vulnerability
“In the UK, more than 60% of IVF is privately funded and one cycle can cost Β£5000 or more. Insufficient public funding and regulation alongside the high demand for fertility treatments have driven the commercialisation and financialisation of ARTs. In the USA, about a third of IVF cycles are done through clinics affiliated with private-equity firms and PGT-A is more likely to be part of IVF treatment in a private equity-affiliated clinic than elsewhere. The money to be made is staggering. The global fertility market was valued at US$34Β·7 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow to 62Β·8 billion in just 10 years.”

“In 2023, the global average temperature anomaly was 0.6Β°C above the 1991β2020 average. However, these anomalies vary by region.
