🔴 🇨🇳 🇺🇸 🎥 China Is Outspending the U.S. to Achieve the ‘Holy Grail’ of Clean Energy
"Fusion has the potential to create nearly limitless energy with no carbon emissions and very limited radioactivity. If China wins, it would have a leg up in a growing competition over energy resources as the U.S. is trying to shift more supply chains within domestic borders."

🔴 Earth’s ‘vital signs’ show humanity’s future in balance, say climate experts
“Climate change is a glaring symptom of a deeper systemic issue: ecological overshoot, [which] is an inherently unstable state that cannot persist indefinitely. As the risk of Earth’s climate system switching to a catastrophic state rises, more and more scientists have begun to research the possibility of societal collapse. Even in the absence of global collapse, climate change could cause many millions of additional deaths by 2050. We need bold, transformative change.”

🔴 When It Comes to Emergency Care, ChatGPT Overprescribes
"Williams said the AI’s tendency to overprescribe could be because the models are trained on the internet, where legitimate medical advice sites aren’t designed to answer emergency medical questions but rather to send readers to a doctor who can."

#DataCenter #emissions probably 662% higher than #bigtech claims. Can it keep up the ruse?
According to a Guardian analysis, from 2020 to 2022 the real emissions from the “in-house” or company-owned data centers of #Google, #Microsoft, #Meta and #Apple may be 7.62 times higher than official tally! #Amazon is the largest emitter of the big five tech companies by a mile – the emissions of the second-largest emitter, Apple, were less than half of Amazon’s in 2022.

It is great to have #QOTO back. Since the upgrade my account profile page shows an error message that can be seen in the image below. Secondly the home timeline is picking toots up from random times. I could be reading a toot from 29 seconds ago and next a toot from 2 days ago. Finally the federated timeline is not automatically refreshing. I wonder if anyone else is having similar issues?

Christie’s ‘Lady Computers’ – the astrographic pioneers of Greenwich.
The first women to be employed at the Royal Observatory in a professional capacity were Isabella Clemes, Alice Everett, Harriet Furniss, Edith Rix and Annie Russell. They were all employed as ‘Lady Computers’ between 1890 and 1895.

🔴 Oklahoma seeks to buy 55,000 Bibles – exactly like the ones Trump is hawking
"The request is part of Republican state superintendent Ryan Walters’ ongoing efforts to require Bibles in every classroom, which has been met with resistance by some of Oklahoma’s largest school districts.
Walters is seeking to spend $3m in state funds for Bibles that fit a certain criteria, including that the pages are supplemented with US historical materials. The Bibles must also be “bound in leather or leather-like material for durability”, according to state bidding documents posted this week."

"Furthermore, the Portuguese state continued to allow the extraction of labor from communities on the basis of caste. The famed physician Garcia d’Orta, writing in 1563, described such labor extraction from communities deemed untouchable in Portuguese Bassein: “In every village, there is a people despised and abhorred by all, who do not touch others, who eat everything, even carrion [as cousas mortas]. Each village gives them its leftovers to eat, without touching them. Their concern is to cleanse the houses and streets of dirt."

⭐ Data centre emissions are soaring – it’s AI or the climate
"AI models consume a lot of electricity, and the World Economic Forum estimated in April that the computer power dedicated to AI is doubling every 100 days. Powering this boom in the US, where many AI tech pioneers are based, have been revitalised gas power plants once slated for closure."
