@frameworkcomputer It works nicely, too! For some reason every Ethernet-to-USB adapter I've ever tried to use before has been unreliable, but the Ethernet Expansion Card in my Framework is doing great.
Don’t Fall Into The Well: New social media networks put a lot of work into onboarding you with cool features. But what truly matters is what those networks look like over time—and open looks better than closed.

@LeaBug :) Love it.
One of the nicest things about #Shetland winters is when the mirrie dancers appear. Mirr means blur in Shetland #dialect. Tonight as I watched the #AuroraBorealis , it really did appear like dancing figures, the speed of their movement obscuring their edges as they merged with the darkness #nature #Scotland #aurora
@LeaBug : That is a good idea!
Well, that was somewhat unexpected!
The prompt was "Here is a social media post generated entirely by an AI:". Maybe that was too meta.
Or maybe that was exactly what it should have been!
#BookReview I Keep my Exoskeletons to Myself, by Marisa Crane (1/17/23) is an extraordinary examination of what it means to be queer and raise a child, in a world with deeply ingrained systemic inequality. The writing is whip-smart, tender, and very funny. The author tackles nearly every institution of oppression with panache and a wallop. Thank you to Catapult Press and #NetGalley for providing an early copy for review. #books @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon

Hi, I'm a storyteller, and here is today's PSA:
Happy endings are not a weakness.
Happy endings are not a silly thing for people who can't handle reality.
Happy endings don't make a story any less serious or artistic.
Stories with happy endings have an important part to play in our emotional wellbeing.
@Edent rather than OGP, oEmbed would make more sense here, as it is more flexible and not controlled by Meta (Mastodon checks for it first, and you can convert OGP into oEmbed easily enough).
There is a cache of providers to save a lookup at https://oembed.com/
This reminds me a bit of the Google favicon cache eg https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=shkspr.mobi&sz=128
and seems like a similar service to check first would be useful.
#BlackMastodon Pure Leaf "No" Grant - $2,000 - Deadline: Nov 30th Pure Leaf and the SeekHer Foundation are dedicated to helping women redefine their work/life boundaries and create a culture where her “no” is celebrated. $2,000 will be awarded to provide short-term support to those who want to say “no” at work — whether that's coming in on a day off, handling others' work, or more. Hello Historians.Social. I'm a librarian (The Queen's College, Oxford - and formerly the BL and Institute of Historical Research + teaching at Birkbeck).
Back in the day, I wrote on time and the French Revolution, then curated the C18th MSS and later the Americas collections at the BL (and still work with BAAS and the US Embassy on their small grants programme).
I've recently worked on newspapers and book history (Inky Business, Reaktion, 2021)
I should probably focus more...
Having now been on #Mastodon for 1 month, a few observations:
- Mastodon makes me realize how much the #Twitter algorithm maximized user outrage to boost engagement for profit. Gross. Here, my feed is interesting & supportive.
- There's a culture of kindness - at least so far. It's extremely appealing & should be normalized on & offline.
- Beyond reactions to toots, people share songs, poetry & ask great questions. I can't remember the last time I found social media to be fun.
The river was old
Once a gathering place
People cleansing themselves
Enchanted by its words
Before it was shrunken
Broken
Forced underground
Along its #bank
You could still find
Bits of lives left behind
Old man rose
Stumbled away
There would be no other
