Elon Musk dehumanizing LGBTQ people

Astronaut Scott Kelly asked Elon Musk not to "mock and promote haste toward already marginalized and at-risk-of-violence members of the LGBTQ+ community. They are real people with real feelings."

And Musk responded, "I strongly disagree"

This is a new low for him. "Strongly disagree" with what? The pronoun stuff is just him mocking hypothetical trans people. I'm so sick of this. I'm sick of this not getting called out.

@matthewkeys

Journalism is vital to robust democracy. But journalists shouldn't let that go to their heads. :) Especially certain grey ladies, for instance.

Was that the one where Muskyboi was so embarrassed that he (reportedly?) has turned off the Spaces function now?

Good morning!

If you're new here, welcome!

If you're using the web interface, try turning on the advanced web interface in the appearance settings.

It gives you multiple columns and 's much nicer than the default.

@grammargirl
On the other hand if you're like me and your reaction to turning on the Advanced Interface was "Arrrgh my eyes! My brain! What is happening??", then there's no shame in turning it back off again. :)

The great thing is having the choice of information-density.

#COVID19 vaccines have kept more than 18.5 million people in the US out of the hospital and saved more than 3.2 million lives, a new study says – and that estimate is most likely a conservative one, the researchers say.

Developers Found Graves in the Virginia Woods. Authorities Then Helped Erase the Historic Black Cemetery.
--

The cemetery’s disappearance cleared the way for the expansion of a #Microsoft data center, despite layers of federal and state #regulations nominally intended to protect culturally significant sites.

“This is not as bad as it sounds,” a consultant wrote in2014 to Microsoft & to a county official. “We should be able to relocate these graves.”

The WHO and World Bank have produced estimates on the number of people worldwide who "do not receive the essential health services they need". The result?

3.8 to 5 billion people, in 2015. That's 52-68% of the world population in that year, denied access to this basic good.

#linguists you heard of this little factoid?

The etymology of the word shark is uncertain, the most likely etymology states that the original sense of the word was that of "predator, one who preys on others" from the Dutch schurk, meaning 'villain, scoundrel' (cf. card shark)

Before the 1600s, "Sharks" were usually called "Sea Dogs"

Which means, in a way, Card Sharks and Loan Sharks are older than Sharks.

Well, older than Sharks being called Sharks.

Not to be (too) snarky, but would current "conservatives" consider MBD conservative? His views, if posted somewhere not branded Conservative, would have him ridiculed by the right as a libtard.

(Also, if he was that prominent you might have gotten his name right. :) This is the snarky part.)

@Axomamma

@Jonathanglick

"For the Fediverse to thrive, it has to be the broadest possible ecosystem of contributors?"

Um... no? I mean, obviously not? The broadest possible "ecosystem" includes all sorts of "contributors" that would not help at all with its thriving.

The Fediverse doesn't need spammers, doesn't need crypto frauds, doesn't need white supremacists and covid truthers and qanon and people calling in bomb threats on libraries and... None of those groups are helpful to a system thriving.

Is this not obvious? Or do you mean something by "ecosystem" and "contributors" that wasn't clear?

@Davidtoddmccarty ... or keep using the web browser; I so far haven't found an app that I prefer to qoto's basic web interface!

Also, hahaha great post.

Good Lord, Twitter ACTUALLY WON'T LET ME POST qoto.org/@ceoln .

It literally said "We can't complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful. Visit our Help Center to learn more."

I didn't think this was real. The muskyboi can still surprise me.

I would expect that a US social media site is probably breaking the law (engaging in anti-competitive behavior) by forbidding links to its competitors.

And I just posted linktr.ee/ceoln instead. :)

@timlee

There are challenging perspectives, and then there are challenging perspectives. :)

I kind of like Mastodon being a place where for instance I can say something about housing as a right, without someone completely innocent of any knowledge of the real world parachuting in and insisting that if only government got out of the way, the free market would inevitably solve homelessness. One gets tired of trying to teach Econ 101 to trolls.

(And where, if a person like that does show up, the cultural expectation is that I would just block them, and look at their server to see if I wanted to block the whole thing.)

I don't really support this idea that it's good to interact with lots of people with positions that are completely ludicrous (Flat Earthers), odious (racism, transphobia, Trumpism), or both (Qanon etc.).

I am happy to have a good-faith discussion with someone who differs from me on, say, the morality of using AI art tools.

But I am also happy not to encounter anyone who thinks that trans people are mentally ill, or that gay people should be executed. If that's a "monoculture", it's a good one.

@timlee @adamdavidson Maybe I was following the wrong people on Twitter (too many political people?) but I am astonished by the numbers of fascinating folks HERE talking the Sciences, History, Journalism, and Arts - from all over the world. There’s so much more to life than red/blue. Except for their civility, I have no idea of their politics. Follow everyone you find interesting, and weed out later if you have to. It’s #FollowFriday BTW - good way to get a start.
