Hey folks! Great to be here. I need some time to learn how this works. I haven’t invested time in it all yet. So will start now! Any tips let me know

Sorry, I am too excited to just boost the news, I have to say it myself:
Tom Lehrer has not only declared all his life's musical work public domain, he has made it available for download for a limited time. So I just spent the last 15 minutes updating my #Plex server...

Seriously! How many are there by now? Post, Hive, Spouter or whatever it is, and now "Spill" or something. Whyyyyy?

The only reason I can think of that these people wouldn't just start a new Mastodon server focused on their area of interest, is that they want to somehow monetize a captive set of users. And we're all tired of that!

@amandanat @randfish @jon To learn more about the fediverse, follow @nova and @tchambers.

Kris is just an amazing human. And the work she's doing with #hachyderm is fun to watch and informative.

Tim boots. A lot. I've turned boosts off for him but I visit his feed occasionally to see what he's boosting because it's good stuff. It's a great way to find interesting content and people to follow.

I believe that shifting our news and media ecosystem away from the profit model is essential, in order to rebuild trust & reduce systemic biases.

But we can't rely on billionaires and their foundations to fund things. For this to work, we have to support nonprofit media.

For #FollowFriday, I'm doing a longer thread about some nonprofit outlets. If you like their work, please consider supporting them.

(FYI: Mastodon supports temporary muting if you feel I'm spamming your feed.)

I don't really understand all this wild exaggeration of how important journalists are. Twitter was not first and foremost a news site for everybody; face it, cat pictures have always been more important than journalism. Journalism is important too, but let's not go crazy.

First up is @ProPublica, for really going all-in on a meaningful presence in the fediverse. (Many of their reporters are here, too.)

You may remember them for their chilling reporting on family separations at the US southern border (content warning: child suffering).

They are not beyond critique (e.g., their recent reporting on the COVID lab leak theory has received significant criticism), but IMO definitely worth a follow.

#elonmusk is a noxious troll and conspiracist. And suspending journalists from #twitter is a thin-skinned whiny power play. But let’s have a bit of perspective. Only yesterday, the #CommitteeToProtectJournalists reported that 363 journalists were imprisoned worldwide as of Dec. 1, 2022. That’s real silencing.

"So that’s the charter, to chart history through music and to trace music through history, all the while trying to look more closely and more critically, trying to unpeel and uncover, and to encourage readers (that’s you!) to do the same."

Wait, does this mean that the house could potentially end up with a Democratic speaker? 😃

Welcome #TwitterMigration! If you're not adding alt text to your media uploads, please do, since it helps out screenreaders.

Also remember to make your hashtags PascalCase or camelCase, since it makes it easier on screenreaders!

On November 17th 2022, my friend Minhyong Kim and I visited the house where Maxwell was born, at 14 India Street, Edinburgh. It's now owned by the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation, and you can take an online tour here:

I took some pictures. There's a little plaque on the door:

Since there's been another big influx of #Qwitters I'll say it again...

Follow liberally it will enrich your timelines!

Your Home timeline is a great place to find accounts to follow. If you see a post boosted, click on the boosted user's avatar. You might not be following them!

Here it's more about who you follow than who follows you. You'll have a better experience by following lots of people

Should all Journalists show solidarity with the banned accounts on Twitter and stop posting on Twitter?

It is a few today that fell foul of Elon Musk, it could be you tomorrow over something else.

If you see this post, vote and boost it.

Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘✨:

Direct Messages here are better described as Mentioned People Only toots (posts).

Direct Messages will appear in your timeline and be visible to ANYONE that you have tagged in this toot 👥

So, if you are Direct Messaging someone, but write the handle of someone else to recommend them (or something else...), they will ALSO be included in this Direct Messages :fhtagn:

Be careful with this! ⚠️

Direct Messages on Mastodon, like on many other platforms, are also not end-to-end encrypted. This means the administrator(s) of your instance and the instance of the person you are sending it to could, if they wanted, read them :2001:

Do not write any sensitive information in Mastodon Direct Messages. Or on any other platform that does not provide solid end-to-end encryption 🔒
