@dietrich : Sure, but how is it relevant? What is the point of bringing it up? Is black-on-white violence somehow different from any other x-on-y violence? In what context would it be somehow helpful to mention it? Obviously addressing poverty, the availability of guns, hopelessness, etc, will reduce all violent crime, including whatever x-on-y type you care to name. So...?

A long and vaguely nerdy essage in the ol' about and and and and related stuff.

When I took Abnormal Psychology in college we spent about two weeks reading and talking about the fluidity of, and harms created by, labels.

Never ended up in psychology, but I still think about the things I learned in those two weeks almost every day.

Manufacturers of all kinds bootstrap the DMCA into a new doctrine that Jay Freeman calls "felony contempt of business model." Removing DRM is illegal, so any business model that hides behind DRM is illegal to thwart. (via @pluralistic) pluralistic.net/2022/12/03/pai

This is a fascinating analysis of "long-termism" from Nafeez Ahmed. He explains this buzzy new pseudo-philosophy, revealing its deep connections to eugenics. This is worth paying attention to because long-termism and its progenitor "effective altruism" are knitted into the belief systems of many Silicon Valley leaders. And, of course, they creep into the business plans of their companies -- and that affects us. bylinesupplement.com/p/the-far

@adeleward #amreading Babel by RF Kuang. My first dip into the 'dark academia' genre. Set in the 1830s, it's a story of empire, capitalism and personal conflict. Love the insights into theories of translation ('always an act of betrayal') and the magic of silver-working. Fascinating, disturbing and completely absorbing - what a book! #fiction

Posted 28 photos: A bright and vivid sunrise over very very big waves. Lunch at the Aberdour Hotel (which has a revamped "green" (code for vegan) menu) with friends from Greener Kirkcaldy. Later, walkies with Max, and then he curled up to help me with my novel. #fife #walkies #sunrise #nanowrimo rhiaro.co.uk/2022/11/photos-su

Once again I am struggling to find graphic novels appropriate for my 7-year-old that weren't all created by white creators. And lists of recommendations for "diverse" books can't be trusted, because they're usually books by white creators but featuring characters who aren't white. #GraphicNovels #Diversity

Not one of the 33 companies participating in a big trial of a 4-day workweek (with no loss in pay) is returning to a standard 5-day schedule. Productivity went up. Revenue went up. Absenteeism and turnover both went down.

"The benefits are significant."
