Or if you want it put another way, every American is spending in the order of $50 a year in direct lethal assistance to Ukraine, but losing about $1700 a year in indirect economic costs caused by that war.

If you had a company that sold a widget that upped a business cost from $50 to, let's say, $100, but doing so saved the customer $1700 a year, how quickly do you think VCs in Silicon Valley would jump in to invest in that widget?

: do you have a nearly empty container of something a sticky but delicious, like , or ? Do you drink ?

In that case, what you do is, cause your coffee emitter to emit the coffee into the nearly empty container, swish it around a few / many times, and then dump that into your usual coffee mug or whatever! Now you have coffee with the flavor of something sticky but delicious! And the nearly empty container will be much easier to clean.

This also works with hot chocolate, and to a degree with tea, depending on exactly your attitude toward tea. Probably hot milk too come to think of it.

Hmm, we really missed the mark when we designed radiators sized for cats but not humans. 😐

New York City
Holiday Windows, 2018

In 2018, I visited NYC for Christmas and toured some of the store windows dressed for the holidays.

I'd never seen windows like these! I wonder if they still put so much effort into them after the pandemic. I hope they do. They were wonderful works of art, and I certainly never forgot them.

Current status: I've peeled and sliced a couple of small hands of ginger, and have put them in a very slow oven; I will check every half an hour at a time until their appearance appeals to me, then I will take them out and make them smaller / grind them in some way, and then put some amount of them into the gingerbread dough! Then we'll see what happens!

Remember that 'distracted boyfriend' picture which went viral? Here's the same people 10 years later.

So, has anyone made using fresh ginger? Without like dehydrating it and grinding it into powder? If I just like grate it and toss it in, will weird things happen?

A belated self-#introduction: I'm a cognitive science professor whose research focuses on human language: how we understand it when we hear & read, how we produce it when we speak & write, and how we learn it. I'm PI of the Computational Psycholinguistics Laboratory (cpl.mit.edu) at MIT where our work draws on ideas and methods from artificial intelligence, linguistics, and psychology. I'm also a passionate advocate for open scholarship, open science, and open access. #nlp #linguistics #cogsci

A lot of white Americans don't value bail reform, because they can't conceive of themselves being charged with a crime they didn't do, when there is literally zero evidence. That seems like a vanishingly rare occurrence.

A lot of Black Americans do support bail reform, because they know that being falsely accused of a crime is a very real possibility for them. Happens a lot.

Both groups of people are correct in their risk assessment. 🙂🙃

I recently emailed a rabbi, and when he didn't reply for two days, the more reasonable part of my brain was like "It's the holidays, this is not an unusual amount of time, and he's probably busy." But the rest of my brain was like "Maybe he found an archive of that time I did an extended thread about which Pokemon are kosher to eat on Twitter".

Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. for decades as a planner of the Montgomery bus boycott and as the primary architect of the 1963 March on Washington. A confidant and adviser, he introduced MLK to Gandhi’s principles of nonviolent resistance. His role in the civil rights movement was largely relegated to the background, however, because he was gay. In the 1980s, he became a public advocate for gay and other human rights. #BlackFriday #LGBTQ
