newbie, part of . Biologist in working on in species. R language. Outside academia, I work with non profit groups to promote and regreening of urban areas.

The UN Secretary General's unflinching statements on climate have been invaluably strong - but he still uses the wording "climate change". The term "climate breakdown" is better: meaning breakdown of Earth's current mode of operation. bbc.com/news/science-environme

Out yesterday, today I have it in hand, too (through my local very small but cleverly selective book store): @gretathunberg@twitter.com's "The Climate Book", with contributions from 100 top-notch international authors, a monumental call to: look up - and not continue as usual.

#Herbaria are such collections. They store many many samples of usually dried and pressed plants. They are basically a #library of #plant #species.
Just like a #librarian, I need to keep order in the chaos, help scientists and visitors to get access or send material on loan. I also provide help to interpret old labels, and I update and reidentify the material.

This is where I work: the #herbarium at the #NaturalHistoryMuseum in London:

So in the last 24 hours I lost 32 followers on twitter (of 5800, hopefully determined people who left twitter altogether) - and, with 65, gained twice as many on mastodon (-> 500).
I wish more large and important climate/environment accounts would explore a move.

So I am trying #TwitterMigration. I am here to share my thoughts on #Japan (East Asian Studies), #SportSociology, and especially on demystifying #Japanesegardens. But I am also very much interested in discussing poor working conditions in (German) academia #IchBinHanna. Luckily I am tenured by now. Still, things need to change dramatically! Oh, and my guilty pleasure is chess.

Since my #introduction toot, I was a bit quiet. Not because of lack of interest but lots of work (after having been on fieldwork and being on holiday).
Nevertheless, I'd like to welcome all #new mastodonteers, who give Mastodon a try. If you like #botany and #plants or (plan to) toot about #pollination or other cool biological or #science stuff, get in contact. Still being #NewHere (#NeuHier) can make you feel a bit isolated, especially when you want to build your bubble of interests and peers.

Hi everyone! For my #introduction also at fediscience: I’m a researcher who’s interested in everything political economy related in particular with an energy transition / technology innovation focus! I think we should talk more about physical infrastructure and economic / political power and I think grids are interesting.

Hello all. #introduction

I want to learn more about What are the best places to look?

So, tracking the impact of global warming and other #climate factors on #health has become a vast research field. A great overview on the state of the art the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report, which is in many ways similar to the IPCC reports.

If this stuff is interesting for fediscience readers, I am happy to share some further news/findings over time!

My #introduction keywords: #academic #evolution #cooperation #ecology

I'm a #postdoc specialising in evolutionary and ecological modelling at #NUS #Singapore currently working on #theoretical #models for the evolution of cooperation, in collaboration with Hisashi Ohtsuki, at #SOKENDAI, #Japan.

Previous work: estimating undetected #extinctions, #qualitativemodelling, migratory #phenology, #foodweb #modelling, local #adaptation, #carryover effects, #dispersal.

My blog nadiah.org/

I really like the feature on my instance () where I can make a list that shows posts with any of a set of hashtags. I've got one list that shows me all posts tagged or , and another that shows me anything tagged , , , , or .

@freemo

Hi, I'm a scientist @unifreiburg who studies what ants think (or how?).

I just moved servers, let's see if I can figure this all out.

Hi all,
I've recently migrated from the mastodon.social server to the fediscience one. Looking forward to meeting you and embracing the unexpected. I'm an evolutionary geneticist interested in mutations and their impact on living matter. #reintroductions

Hello new people! 👋

I run a human-curated directory of interesting accounts to follow on here:

➡️ fedi.directory

Do you have an account that posts a lot about a particular topic? Would you like to be listed in the directory?

If so, reply or @ me or send me a DM and let me know!

(The site only went live a few days ago so some topics are less populated than others, but this is why I am working on expanding it!)

Boosts appreciated :blobcat:
