If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via @thediscourse study.

This isn’t just about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice.

Lion from the Ishtar Gate in #Babylon, one of King Nebuchadnezzar’s many urban renewal projects. Nebuchadnezzar was no slouch as a general either, defeating the combined armies of Egypt and what was left of the Assyrian empire in 605 BC, and sacking Jerusalem in 587 BC, which led to the Babylonian captivity. His empire only survived for 25 years after his death, ending when his successors were defeated by Cyrus the Great, the Persian founder of the Achaemenid dynasty.

COVID wastewater levels in Ottawa, Canada have been relatively flat the past week but you can see they have never gone back down to low levels since Omicron BA.1 hit a year ago and the new "baseline" is quite elevated showing there is a still a significant amount of COVID circulating in the community. 9/

'Many students are telling the National Union for Students that they cannot afford to continue with their studies.

'They’re having to choose between feeding themselves and carrying on with their education', a union spokesperson said. 'Many can no longer afford to travel to placements and to their campuses, or they're holding down multiple jobs to make ends meet. Inevitably, it is the students from the poorest backgrounds who are being disproportionately affected.'

To all Mastodon-admins: seems like there's an attack on all instances by troll accounts. Servers get slow because of it.
They use thousands of subdomains of activitypub-troll.cf. My 'pull' queues skyrocketed.

I now blocked the domain activitypub-troll.cf and all is back to normal. Please check if you're hit too.

If rail workers do end up engaging in a wildcat or otherwise illegal strike, PLEASE remember that strikes are meant to be disruptive. If you see someone talking about the rail strike and how it's having such a huge impact, say things like "Yeah, it's crazy how much of our economy relies on them. That's why they deserve good health care."

It seems many people haven’t encountered the Swiss Cheese Respiratory Pandemic Defense model.

Since #COVID, #RSV and #flu are spreading a lot, I figured I’d re-share it.

Some people aren't yet ready to deal with the truth - and they can be loud.

But most people want to do the right thing.

Exhibit A: in a recent poll, *overwhelming* majorities of Canadians supported mask mandates.

You are not alone.

#MaskUp and keep going.

My personal view after 3 yrs of interviews in the pandemic: there’s something special about Canadian journalism. Few work harder to get it right, not introduce their own biases while appealing to humanitarian goals. Most journalists aspire to this but Canada is just so consistent

I was diagnosed with #HIV in 1998, when I was 30.
At the time, I did not expect to live to 50.
I’m 55 now.
HIV treatment works and it means I can’t pass it on - we call this #UequalsU.
HIV changed. Tell everyone.

Seriously, it will be a few month rough-patch during which I'll keep my head down but we'll come out ahead after that. It's just so needless when the measures that people were protesting against were the ones we needed the least and there's so much cheap easy stuff we could do.

French PM says covid is not over and calls for wearing a mask in public transport.

As they say here in Belgium "when it rains in Paris, it drizzles in Brussels", so I hope to hear something similar from our own government soon. #bringmasksback #CovidIsNotOver

Tomorrow we are going to be discussing STOP-ACEi on NephJC. The main chat will be on Twitter, #NephJC to follow, but I'll be straddling both platforms and try to port some of the tweets and interesting observations using @NephJC.

This is a great resource, if anyone asks about the science behind masks and their use - thanks for compiling it, @Billius27@twitter.com. It won’t sway people who are vehemently against the idea that we #BringBackMasks, but it will help people who want to learn more. billius27.substack.com/p/masks

Again, when people push the narrative that all Chinese nationals are "bots", have no personal agency, aren't creative (like machines), are brainwashed ants- this is not harmless speculation. These are racist attempts to dehumanize us- and most of you quietly accept it.
