"Collectively, our findings demonstrate HCMV reactivation in senescent cells, which CD4 CTLs can directly eliminate through the recognition of the HCMV-gB antigen."
If you're in London:
"Berthe Morisot, extraordinarily a footnote in Impressionist history until a decade ago, arrives at London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery for her first UK exhibition in 70 years. It’s a wonderfully sympathetic, intelligent, enlightening show, placing Morisot at the heart of French painting while allowing her individuality to shine."

"The induction of cellular cytotoxicity requires that the NK cell contacts its target cell and establishes a lytic immunological synapse. Previous reports have revealed that membrane protrusions may be a component of immune synapses. Here, we explored whether changes in the topology of intratumoral NK cell membranes relate to the formation of lytic immunological synapses."

The hummingbird as the Thermus aquaticus of RNA editing tools?
"We exogenously expressed different heterologous ADARs to reveal their distinct editing potential and identified two exceptionally active A-to-I editors: the hummingbird ADAR2, and primarily the mallard-duck ADAR1, whose core body temperature is 40–42°C."

"With IL-8-humanized mouse strain, we demonstrate that IL-8-producing CD4+ T, myeloid, and tumor cells orchestrate myeloid-derived suppressor cell infiltration and angiogenesis, which results in enhanced tumor growth but reduced ICB efficacy."

Lemurs, glazed stoneware by @hunchbacksociety
For Throwback Thursday, from our Darwin Exhibition catalogue (2009), a shout-out to the trio at the Naval Museum in Lisbon that built our HMS Beagle model, Paula Galrinho, José Galrinho, and José Lopes. The riggings were very accurate, so that the 1.61m (1:27) long model used up three kilometres of thread!
Dream the Repair Master sounds like a Neil Gaiman plot but is actually a paper from Björn Schumacher et al
'We show that the DREAM complex transcriptionally represses essentially all DNA-repair systems and thus operates as a highly conserved master regulator of the somatic limitation of DNA-repair capacities.'

'We think of him painting the beautiful: Ginevra de’ Benci, Cecilia Gallerani and Salai glow with glossy hair and good bone structure. Yet alongside his fascination with youth and loveliness Leonardo was obsessed with irregular, diseased and aged faces whose “monstrous” distortions he drew with daunting precision.'
Today, in every-cell-is-an-immune-cell:
"STING activation in platelets was a critical driver of sepsis-induced pathology. Platelet-specific STING deficiency suppressed platelet activation and granule secretion, which alleviated sepsis-induced intravascular thrombosis and NETosis in mice."

From 12/21: I spoke with Harmit Malik on the #EMBOPodcast about how he got started, mobile genetic elements, genomic defences, and (with @tlemberger) preprints.
"Just like many other important transitions in life, I think my transition from chemical engineering to biology was chaperoned by a fantastic mentor.
(...)
He made even dry topics seem very interesting - but when he was teaching about the Lac operon and the basic fundamentals of molecular biology I was completely transfixed. It became something that I felt I could not pass up the opportunity to see if this is something I could spend the rest of my career on."

The works presented here are created with alternative materials rather than etched on copper. From squashed paper costumes to packaging and leather book covers, objects are inked with different processes, both intaglio and planographic. Scales vary and are usually life-size." by @madparreira #Prints #Handmade #BookArt
'We here demonstrate that mitochondrial DNA stress upregulates the immunoproteasome and MHC class I antigen presentation pathway via cGAS/STING/type I interferon signaling resulting in cell autonomous activation of CD8+ T cells.'
