This March the Dutch Society for Immunology (DSI/NVVI) host the NVVI Spring Meeting. We host inspiring talks on many topics in #immunology: #Infection, #Modeling, #Neuroscience, #Cytokines, #TumorImmunology.
It's a relatively small meeting, so you have plenty of opportunities to meet the speakers and other participants.
Early bird registration ends February 16th.

"Study: Over 50% of academics admit to pirating research papers
A majority of the survey respondents say they used websites like Sci-Hub to avoid paywalls by accessing illegal copies of research. "
wow. sound like a healthy ecosystem?

'In summary, we demonstrate that human T cells possess a functional cGAS-STING signaling pathway that can contribute to antiviral immunity. However, regardless of its potential antiviral role, the activation of the cGAS-STING pathway negatively affects T cell function at multiple levels'

They're still great
'A study published Tuesday in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology reveals that these brown crabs have been on the menu for a long time. In a cave less than 20 miles from Lisbon, researchers discovered charred remnants of shells and claws: evidence that Neanderthals were cooking and eating crab 90,000 years ago.'

In response to FL Gov. Ron DeSantis’s actions to limit the teaching of Black history in the state’s public schools, Chicago-based publisher Haymarket Books is offering multiple e-books by progressive Black authors for students to download free of charge. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackMastodon

What happens with Google search, ChatGPT etc is that they skim off the hard word of journalists without linking back to our platforms any more, cutting us off from readers and potential customers who might support our investigations and work, i.e. the very creation of quality information. It‘s value strip-mining at its worst when Google searches don‘t yield links to actual journalism any more but „answers“ that are algorithmically synthesized. https://www.niemanlab.org/2023/02/google-now-wants-to-answer-your-questions-without-links-and-with-ai-where-does-that-leave-publishers/
Nature obit for David Allis
'Histone modifications were first reported by Vincent Allfrey in 1966, but before Allis’s work, their significance and associated enzyme activities remained unclear. Allis showed that they had a direct link with the regulation of DNA’s transcription into RNA and hence into expressed proteins.'
I recently wrote a piece about how authors can avoid contributing to medical misinformation. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-022-02118-1
This article is a perfect illustration of why I proposed the first principle in the article.
“Be aware of the information landscape into which you are releasing your work. Consider the debates and controversies to which your work might pertain, the special interests that might pick up on your findings and spin them, and the biases that your findings might reinforce.”

Fibroblasts were traditionally seen as structural cells, but technological advances have revealed important roles in immune function. @arthritisbham @ColesBuckleyLab &co from @KirOxford look at why #fibroblasts matters for health and disease. #PLOSBiology

@PLOSBiology Similar to discovering that adipocytes contribute to immune function.
More cell types may be found in the future to participate in the immune system. That is why that system is so amazingly wonderful. (To me, anyway 😏) #immunology

Maybe you've heard about Trikafta, the 'miracle' drug that has transformed life for people with cystic fibrosis in North America and Europe? It costs $322,000 a year, and patients take it for life.
Turns out the drug isn't available for CF patients anywhere in the developing world. And they say that's on purpose: that the maker, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, is deliberately obstructing access so as to be able to maintain that price tag.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
