Excess mortality among non #COVID19 surgical patients in 🇫🇷 French intensive & intermediate care units during #pandemic, nationwide study demonstrating considerable increase in surgical death risk during periods of high hospital exposure to #SARSCoV2 cases in ICU/IMCU beds. The majority of excess in‐hospital mortality resulted from inpatient deaths outside of #ICU/IMCU, suggesting limited access to critical care following surgery.

Happy to announce that the full genome sequence of the Cambodian #H5N1 #avianflu case is now available on @GISAID. This has been an incredible effort by a number of people: (1/)

Some #Immunology101:

A virus infection induces a strong T cell response. In the case of a virus; a type-1 response: involving Th1 cells and CD8 T cells. These cells are known to make the cytokine interferon-gamma (IFNg). They express activation markers, including PD-1.

'The N.I.H. said its scientists, some of whom had been collaborating for years with Moderna, had helped to design that sequence. Moderna also received nearly $10 billion in taxpayer funding to develop and test the vaccine, and to provide doses to the federal government. The company has sold roughly $36 billion worth of coronavirus vaccines worldwide.'

'Derrotado frente a su hijo, el coronel Márquez volvió a la vida civil y vivió más de tres décadas como veterano de guerra, hasta que murió en 1937. García Márquez vivió con él, sus padres lo dejaron a su cuidado desde que era un bebé, y siempre contaba que uno de sus primeros recuerdos de infancia era dormir en un colchón junto a la cama del coronel.'

"The InsB-g7 CAR re-directed NOD Treg specificity such that insulin B 10-23-peptide stimulation enhanced suppressive function, measured via reduction of proliferation and IL-2 production by BDC2.5 T cells and CD80 and CD86 expression on dendritic cells. Co-transfer of InsB-g7 CAR Tregs prevented adoptive transfer diabetes by BDC2.5 T cells in immunodeficient NOD mice"

A reasonable proposition:

"Given the growth of withdrawals due to negative confirmatory trials and emerging evidence on the high spending associated with AA drugs, it is critical to balance early access against population-level exposure to cancer therapies with no benefit over standard of care."

"Using machine-learning approaches and differential gene expression we identified a drastic loss of transcription factor hypoxia induced factor 1 alpha (HIF-1a) expression and activity associated with features of a metabolic switch and mitochondrial stress in monocytes/dendritic cells."

"Here, we show that p53, one of the most commonly inactivated tumor suppressors in glioma, is a gatekeeper of astrocyte fate. In the context of stab-wound injury, p53 loss destabilized the identity of astrocytes, priming them to dedifferentiate in later life."

'Diverse animals such as corals, polychaete worms, and certain fishes are thought to synchronize their reproductive behavior by the moon. Such animals—including more than 100 coral species at the Great Barrier Reef—release their eggs before fertilization takes place, and synchronization maximizes the probability of an encounter between eggs and sperm.'

"She has warned against the “cancellation” of benefactors, whether the colonialist Cecil Rhodes or the opioid-seller Mortimer Sackler. "
