Ok. Time to embrace something better! I study allergies and neuroimmunology…and now I study how #ScienceMastodon works.

#Introduction

Hi #ScienceMastodon. #focalplane_jcs is your #community site, connecting people, resources and information across all areas of #microscopy.

Anyone can contribute on focalplane.biologists.com, and we’ll be tooting the latest news and posts from the community. You can also join the #FocalPlane Network, an international directory of #microscopists designed to help you find collaborators, speakers and reviewers.

Hello #ScienceMastodon!

I am a molecular and cellular neurobiologist leading a research group trying to figure out #axonaltransport & #neurodegeneration. A big emphasis on #microtubules, #kinesin and #dynein, but really the transport of anything that doesn't have a membrane around it. We use a lot of #singlemolecule methods and #livecellimaging.

I also post about #researchculture, particularly how we can better invest in people so they can do great science.

“They would bombard us with these testimonies in every single service, and the pastors would preach that if you’ve got savings in your account, it is time for you to put it on the altar,” Mariah said. She remembers selling her local authority-issued laptop to donate the money to the church when she was about 15, and described “one of the lowest points of my life” as later going to sixthform college in the snow wearing only light summer shoes because she did not have money left over from all her donations.'

Sharing some interesting papers (haven't had the time to read them yet, but abstracts look cool!)

'Inflammatory Bowel Disease-Associated Gut Commensals Degrade Components of the Extracellular Matrix'

'some commensal bacteria in the gut are indeed capable of degrading components of human ECM in vitro and suggest that this proteolytic activity may be involved in the progression of IBD'

This is great by @davidallengreen on the spectacle of Owen Paterson, who called for repeal of the Human Rights Act and even 'breaking free from the ECHR,' taking his case to the European Court of Human Rights.

His lawyers say despite the irony 'he has no other choice' - 'And that is the very point of human rights law... They are all there as a last resort, for those with no other choice' - like the migrants Paterson complained about.

“A theme of the novel,” le Carré wrote to his aunt Ella Haymes, who along with her sister Ruby was upset by the book (or at least its reception—they hadn’t read it), “is that hypocrisy thrives upon the silence and the goodheartedness of respectable people, and that deceit, when it passes unchallenged, can be bestowed upon one generation by another.”

'We leveraged the UK Biobank to identify genetic loci that influence humoral immune response to multiple infections. From 45 genome-wide association studies in 9,611 participants from UK Biobank, we identified NFKB1 as a locus associated with quantitative antibody responses to multiple pathogens including those from the herpes, retro- and polyoma-virus families.'

Model organism limitations

"Although many of the fundamental observations in murine models are expected to be similar in human tissue, it may still be difficult to directly transfer the observations to a human context. In particular, murine skin architecture is dominated by hair follicles, which are less frequent in human skin, leaving human skin with a larger proportion of much thicker interfollicular epidermis (22). Hence, to understand and translate the functions of the TGF-β signaling pathways into a human setting, it is important to use a human cellular and tissue system"

"Many researchers do not share their data and code simply because they do not know how. The process of archiving data and code is not always straightforward. In one survey of biologists, 46% of respondents were unaware of how to organize data in a presentable and usable way, and 33% reported that not knowing which online hosting service, or repository, to use was a barrier to sharing data and code "

"Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohns disease (CD) are chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases that show a perplexing heterogeneity in manifestations and response to treatment. The molecular basis for this heterogeneity remains uncharacterized. We applied single-cell RNA sequencing and CosMxTM Spatial Molecular Imaging to human colon and found the highest diversity in cellular composition in the myeloid compartment of UC and CD patients."

New server #introduction:

I'm a Group Leader at #HHMI #Janelia working at the intersections of #ComputerVision, #MachineLearning, #Neuroscience & #Ethology. I use #CV & #ML to gain insight into biology. I love algorithms (both computer & biological) & trying to understand how, when & why they work. But really I'm an engineer & want to solve problems however! I also want to make science diverse & inclusive.

Outside work, I like sunshine, outdoors, #climbing & #crosswords.

'After the Nazis invaded France in May 1940, he fled Paris by bicycle, with Pontecorvo and others. Regrettably, Selya provides only a brief sketch of this dramatic escape to the south of France, through Spain to Portugal, where he was finally granted US immigration papers. She notes that the drama included being shot at from planes and hiding in an abandoned farmhouse with the Italian writer Carlo Levi. From Lisbon, Luria travelled in a ship packed with refugees, reaching New York City on 12 September, with US$52 in his pocket.'

Ignoring the pandemic doesn't make it go away. All it does is disproportionately shift all of the burden of the pandemic on to the people who are the most vulnerable and have the fewest resources.

'Some scientists' have a point:

"Some scientists have expressed caution about reading too much into topline results, which show lecanemab reduced the rate of cognitive decline in early-stage patients by 27 per cent compared with a placebo after 18 months. They said it was critical that Eisai and Biogen present full trial data and publish their findings in a peer-reviewed journal to rebuild confidence in amyloid-targeting ’s drugs following recent failures."
