Another #introduction …this time public
I am a #neuroscientist based at the #ovgu university Magdeburg.
After a PhD in Berlin with Michael Brecht and a postdoc in the lab of Susana Lima at the Champalimaud Foundation I recently joined the institute of biology in Magdeburg as a tenured researcher and professor.
My lab will study how neural circuits are at the interface between the multimodal environment and the homeostatic body in order to drive social and sexual behavior in mice.

'The shift in speech is just the tip of a set of changes on the service under Mr. Musk. Accounts that Twitter used to regularly remove — such as those that identify as part of the Islamic State, which were banned after the U.S. government classified ISIS as a terror group — have come roaring back. Accounts associated with QAnon, a vast far-right conspiracy theory, have paid for and received verified status on Twitter, giving them a sheen of legitimacy.'

The lab has identified one of the major mechanisms to explain the very large amount of adaptation driven by viruses in the host virus-interacting proteins (VIPs): changes in protein stability.

'We report on the protocolized use of tecovirimat (SIGA Technologies), an antiviral drug with activity against orthopoxviruses (including monkeypox and smallpox),1 under an expanded access program for all patients with monkeypox virus (MPXV) disease in Mbaïki, Central African Republic, between December 2021 and February 2022.2 Included in the study were 14 patients in whom MPXV infection had been diagnosed.'

Tweetstorm of my HHMI talk on “Preprint peer review as an alternative career currency”. Sharing widely b/c I think all academic institutions should adopt this.

Proposal: Formalize peer reviewing preprints as part of PhD/post-doc training. Here’s why… 🧵 1/n

Hi #ScienceMastodon, I'm a physician-scientist and immunologist. Our lab studies how aberrant immunity at barrier surfaces drive disease. I have a special interest in type 2 immunity and allergic diseases, but am generally fascinated by #immunology and #biology.

'However, you may not know some of the most basics facts about the object. For instance, what was its purpose, and what did it actually say? In this video, Ilona Regulski, curator of Egyptian written culture at the British Museum in London, walks viewers through the stone and its ‘decree’, issued during the Ptolemaic dynasty in 196 BCE.'

'Our findings show that efforts to develop parvoviruses as therapeutic tools can be approached from a rational foundation based on comparative evolutionary analysis. To support this, we published our data in the form of an open, extensible, and cross-platform database designed to facilitate the wider utilisation of evolution-related domain knowledge in parvovirus research.'

So happy to see that you can use a .gif for your header here. Having a little fun with that to show y'all the full look at one of my favorite microscope images of a #macrophage (#immune cell) in the process of slurping up the bacteria that causes #Lyme disease. Showing that here alongside my favorite single slice.
