Gross! I'll wear a mask in public restrooms from now on whether we have #COVID19 or not...

Speaking of wastewater, a very cool study used lasers to actually see and measure the aerosol plumes that come out of toilets when you flush ( nature.com/articles/s41598-022 ). H/T: @yaneerbaryam 7/

"Here, we investigate fundamental virological traits that influence cross-species transmissibility and zoonotic propensity by interrogating a database of over 12,000 mammalian virus–host associations. Our analysis reveals that enveloped viruses tend to infect more host species and are more likely to be zoonotic than nonenveloped viruses, while other viral traits such as genome composition, structure, size, or the viral replication compartment play a less obvious role."

New research looks at the effects of repeated Covid infections and finds pretty much what you would expect: you not only do not get any kind of superimmunity, you increase your risk of long-term consequences, hospitalization and death. The worse news is that this holds true regardless of vaccination status.

This is not over. Please take care. Mask up.

'Magic realism once referred to the literary style of a loosely connected group of Latin American authors who penned works some 60 years ago, but in the English-speaking world, the term has become synonymous with Latin American writing in general. Picture every work by a British writer being called “Austenesque” today, and you get an idea of this phenomenon.'

Photographer Renatas Jakaitis captured this unintended moment when three fallow-deer were walking along a path and the sound of her camera caught their attention. Like an optical illusion, the deer appeared as one body with three almost identical heads.

This preprint on using GEMs (genetically encoded multimeric particles) for cellular cryoEM looks really nice. It is conceptually similar to FerriTagging developed in @roylelab (although they don't cite us 😐). The ability to non-invasively label proteins at nanoscale in EM images is really important for many questions in cell biology.

'Even more existential was the decision about what to do with the clinical trial as Covid-19 swept through hospitals, putting many studies on hold. Many others in the industry stopped to think — and then found it hard to restart the trials. Within 24 hours, Immunocore committed to continuing no matter what. “This would have been life or death for the company,” she says.

To do so, they had to switch to telehealth fast, with no time to wait for guidance from the regulator. Immunocore had to rapidly come up with plans for every scenario, such as identifying which data was absolutely essential for time-pressed staff to enter, and what to do if a patient developed Covid. In June 2020, the trial ended up finishing enrolling patients on time.'

#Advent Day11: #Drosophila histrio! The only European member of the histrio group, it is superficially a little similar to D. immigrans but is a toadstool specialist that hugs the forest floor doi.org/10.1046/j.1365-2311.20. Drosophila histrio is a big fly (for a drosophilid…) that lays large numbers of small eggs, and seems to prefer very short-lived fungi jstor.org/stable/6018. They rarely come to yeasted fruit bait, and in the UK I have caught them on sulfur tufts (Hypholoma) #Diptera #Entomology
