'If approved by regulators at the US Food and Drug Administration later this month, the experimental drug, known as KarXT, a twice daily pill, will arguably be the first truly novel treatment for in more than seven decades.'

"Larger-than-life screen personalities are necessarily watchable. Some also prove mysteriously listenable. Lynch is among them, a member of the small pantheon of filmmakers whose mystique is partly indebted to the textures of their speech: the gorgeous intonations of Orson Welles, the reminiscing tones of Agnès Varda, the runaway-train enthusiasm of Quentin Tarantino."

'Depois, aviões de Israel rugiram sobre uma Beirute em choque, bombardearam o Sul do Líbano. E continuei a ver títulos como: EUA correm a travar escalada da guerra. Será isso na Lua? Em Marte? Ou é mesmo aquela guerra que os americanos continuam a armar? Ao fim de quase um ano, e de nunca se ter visto tanto horror em directo com tanta lata. E tanta troça.'

'In the ruins of the Kharkiv suburbs recently, and in the rubble of the Kherson region last year, I was reminded of a nurse who arrived at a Nazi concentration camp in 1945 after “liberation.” She wrote in her diary that this was not the correct word. Inmates could not be regarded as free, she thought, until they had been restored to health and their trauma was addressed.'

'In 1941, the humorist Will Cuppy wrote that the dodo — with an ugly face, a misplaced tail, too-small wings and a prominent stomach — seemed to have been invented for the sole purpose of becoming extinct. “You can’t look like that and survive,” he mused. “Or can you?”

'The strikingly simple, almost primitive looking experimental methods he employed in his thesis against the backdrop of ongoing World War II left a deep impression on me, especially with the historical hindsight of knowing that both Jacob-Monod model of gene regulation and the later study of allostery build up on this thesis work- of E.coli in variety of sugar waters.'

"Barnett Rosenberg wasn't trying to cure cancer. He wasn't working on cancer. He wasn't working on any disease-related problem. He wasn't even working with human cells. All he was trying to do was to test a hypothesis about what would happen when dividing bacteria were placed in a strong electric field."

'On 16 Sep 2024, I watched with utter incredulity at Dr Ritchie giving her evidence at the UK Covid-19 Inquiry. When challenged with Professor Beggs’ IPC expert evidence concerning airborne transmission of Covid-19, Dr Ritchie appeared to contradict him by stating that the epidemiology and scientific literature did not support airborne spread as the predominant mode of transmission and that the latest World Health Organization (WHO) guidance hadn’t changed in this respect.'

Scientists are building a giant ‘evidence banks’ to create policies that actually work

Controversial, being evidence-based rather than ideology-based. 🫠

"#OnlineWriting is not the same as book or magazine writing, even op-ed or letter-to-the-editor writing. To understand online writing, you also need to understand its #ecosystem: online, we think together, iterating on each other and boosting ideas we like by linking to them. Online writing is conversational, social, and deeply embedded in #remixculture (suitable for back-linking). Much of the power of #onlinethinking is how ideas synthesize out of the collective."

Looking forward to reading this memoir - Kai took over from Sydney Brenner as the chair of the (now defunct) IGC SAB & it was always enlightening to discuss with him

"His fame grew with the publication of a vastly expanded second edition in 1803, which substantiated the basic principle of population with references to 18th-century travel literature and statistics gleaned from the latest censuses, but which also elaborated on a moral dimension of the Essay’s otherwise abstract, mechanical reasoning. To the positive checks of war, famine and pestilence Malthus added the ‘preventive’ check of moral restraint – man’s unique capacity to abstain from ‘promiscuous intercourse’, save money and delay marriage. This exception to the otherwise implacable laws of nature signalled an anthropological turn in Malthus’s argument, but also, as the historian Boyd Hilton put it, an ‘evangelical creep’."

Incredible. US summer camp promises to teach kids how great capitalism is, ends up bringing out the WORST in every child (no surprise there), makes everyone feel better with socialism because they can't bear to make the kids feel bad. Great anticapitalism ad?

The kicker: they never tell anyone about the socialism part. Send kids home feeling great about capitalism.
