I just want the erson to be happy. If leaving makes him happy, leave, if staying makes him happy stay.

Either way he has my best wishes and I'm more than happt to listen to and discuss any concerns he may have.

But if he leaves or not is on him, not me, as long as he is respectful he is always welcome here.

@freemo @mngrif @iamo Good morning friends, I am back in action, first cup of coffee on hand.

I am glad iamo has changed her mind, we had some discussions over her concerns last night, I responded to some of the posts via DM. (pronoum choice guided by iammo's profile content)

I did she a crude, obnoxious person respond on a thread where we discussed the democratic candidates and 2020 election. This 'person' irked me to the point of muting, so I don't know it that continued. I can post a link if needed.

There seemed to be a quite personal attack coming from that guy (only a man could be so nasty, me thinks. Piles shame on my own gender). From the gist of it, I would say this guy had interactions with iamo in the past, and two accounts at least he posted from, posted a screenshot with two profile pics and names.

I am glad too that iamo has decided to trust the administration here to handle things without heavy hand, but still compassion and sensitivity.

Good morning, afternoon for those in Europe.

@design_RG

Yea please link me to it, perhaps i can resolve the issue as a mod. We will silence instances if they do not respect a users right to disengage. So if they continued to attack after being told it wasnt welcome we may have cause for moderator action.

@freemo @mngrif @iamo Just found it, was a long way down the notifications thread. Busy day and night yesterday! ๐Ÿ˜บ

That guy is clearly very disgusting, but in the future my suggestion is when these people attack just say "please leave me alone" that way if they continue we have grounds to claim harassment.

While his views were disgusting and would get him a block on qoto itself he is on another instance. So generally we arent as quick to block whole instances unless a person engages in harassment (doesnt go away when asked). Being rude and insulting gets you banned in qoto but not, by itself, would it get another instance banned.

With that said this is somewhat related to the nature of qoto. Because it isnt local but is coming from an instance it gives users unique power to simply mute an entire instance and problem solved. There are only a handful of instances (maybe 5 or 6) that allow that sort of behavior so it is easy to mute the whole server from the users account.

Obviously since we dont allow people like that locally it means you will never have to deal with them in your feed once you activate that initial mute.

Wonderful.

I thank the stars who guided me here, a brand new user in fediverse very recently, and finding my home at a place with this very essential control -- I had noted it and used it to block an instance I object to already, days ago. Made a public post and explained it to other users too, because I think it's a great tool to keep things sane.

Kudos, Dr Freemo. This is first class work. ๐Ÿฅ‚

I noticed, thank you for sharing that with the community.

Sadly as a moderator myself I do not have the privilage of muting instances because I need to be able to see harassment and help by stepping in where and when I can (even if its just to try to make peace).

So while i encourage our users to mute anyone they wish or any instance they wish, I myself must rely on people respecting my right to disengage. But that has the advantage of possibly leading us to silence instance before they have a chance to harass our users.

Youll notice we DID already silence spinster for example (one of only two silenced instances at the server level). This is for exactly that reason, when a user was asked to disengage they continued to harass for days on end. The moderators there responded by saying it was acceptable, and as such we silenced.

So similarly if that ever happens to one of our users we would silence the instance if the moderators dont act. As such it may be a good idea to tell users to "go away" and if it continues to report them.

@freemo
Yes, being in a moderation position, its more difficult since you need to see the traffic, like it or not, to respond to it if necessary.

There are stories on the net about how people working in content moderation for Facebook (under subcontracting, low pay, many hours and quotas to meet) have had their mental health affected by constant exposure to some of the worst content, which they were obliged to recognize and deal with.

Your position is admirably open minded and fair, imo. Responding to another network node's refusal to act is perfectly natural.

No damage resulted, as I am still able to follow a post to its source there if I wish; I did follow a thread and visited a spinster profile yesterday in fact.

Contrary to some wil largue, this is not censorship. Some people use the 'free speech' and 'fist ammendment' lines as catch all, justify anything lifesavers.

Many others disagree, and we all have opinions and thanfully live in various jurisdictions with different philosophies and legal structures.

I find Europe the most sane and civilized place to live at this moment in time. Wish I was there, when I return to North America from a trip there, it's always hard to cope. ๐Ÿ˜”

@design_RG

Europe seems to have a lot less prejudice and hate at least...

Censorship is weird. Technically just banning a spam bot is censorship. Very few people truely want no censorship of any kind, particularly when you take that to its extreme

To me qoto is no censorship because we dont censor ideas, we arent trying to construct an environment exclusive to one set of ideologies or thought or against any such ideology.

We moderate (not censor) based only on how people treat each other. We basically just want people with good intentions, not people who conform.
