Story Time. Joining the Internet in the mid 90's.

Just finished editing a new Blog post, with the story of how I first joined the Internet, in the mid 1990's.

MarkDown language - Easy to learn, worth it!

language is a new thing I am learning and starting to use.

Last night I posted a topic here about a MarkDown tutorial, which is available in English, Spanish and French. Took a couple hours later to do it and was impressed.

* Topic: qoto.org/@design_RG/1033040629

Very, very well done, simple and demonstrates the commands to format text by explaining them, giving you an area to type in and format text with a preview window besides.

Spent more time after and edited a whole Blog post I had made, formatted with HTML Markup language and which was not kosher yet.

Resulted in a much cleaner and prettier page. :blobsmilehappyeyes:

I just copied the revise Blog post here to Discourse forums : discourse.qoto.org/t/qoto-mode

This one is set on Public view, can be checked anonymously.

The previous edition is on the Moderation area, and can be seen by logged in users only, not anonymous, but it's here if you want to compare: discourse.qoto.org/t/qoto-mode

MarkDown Interactive Tutorial - in English too!

And I just worked for a couple hours, soon time for bed.

Completed this tutorial, linked above, and it is VERY good. Well explained, with examples, you enter markdown format until you get it right and it allows you to go on to the next step. (or hit cancel, if you can't figure out why it's not as expected).

After reading and practicing, I needed to work on a real project, and I knew one of my recent Blog posts could use some work -- some of the text was jagged, not right, I had used html markup and was the best I could do at the time.

With some back and forth, I copied the whole post from one blog instance to another, as a Backup so I wouldn't break it (and regret).

Turned out NICE. Finally, the jaggedness is gone. The numbered list is progressing as expected.

AND - the formatting for the lists and headers is much shorter and easier than HTML ones.

Will post here the two, Before and After. so you can see the difference.

* AFTER : write.tedomum.net/rgx/qoto-mod

Happy and ready to wind down a productive day. Good night, verse.

MarkDown Interactive Tutorial - in English too!

🇬🇧 MarkDown language is a simplified form of creating a variety of text styles. Bold, Italicized, Underline, Header (text) sizes, all in much shorter and easier commands than classic HTML Markup language.

Note the name, a play on the HTML variant.

The Interactive MarkDown tutorial is also available in ENGLISH for those who are more comfortable in that language.

See it here: markdowntutorial.com/

MarkDown, ¿sabes qué es? ¡Aprende en español!

If you speak Spanish, there are LESS resources to learn about this and other tech topics.

Found a Blog post here that explains the Basics, in Spanish, and links to another site with an interactive tutorial.

Have a look at those two screenshots. See the differences?

I am looking forward to the enhancements in GlitchSoc to percolate to other versions and forks.

Our sys admin here, @freemo has already mentioned he would like to merge some of these into the QOTO fork itself.

Time to do that is the problem, but the idea stands.

Cheers, ! 😉 🍾 🍷

I love it, fresh new features include a strictly LOCAL, not federated at all option when you create any post.

But this Toot series is about the MarkDown, and here are the controls that enable it. Or even the choice to use full html tags on post if desired.

What is going on? HOW did you get that text so?

The first pic was taken at a Glitch-Soc instance, a Mastodon fork which has some new ideas and controls.

The second one shows the same post, as seen on a regular instance, running a fork of mastodon 2.9.3.

The difference is down to MarkDown language, a simple text formatting language I am starting to learn and use on some places (blog, note taking support it.)
