@Extelec Ahhh. Blown a smoke seal I see. Quick patch and a refil of smoke and it'll be right as rain!

Coolest video I've seen today: an electronic scanner-paint plotter from 1970!

Cybersecurity checklist:
Are all your devices running an EDR?
Is your network firewall configured correctly?
Has someone filled your computer with C4?
Do you have multifactor authentication enabled?

Well, I guess Western democracies have just ruled that carrying out a supply-chain attack on personal technology to indiscriminately mass murder people is perfectly fine.

Thankfully, only Israel can use such a tactic to murder the Browns.

Oh, wait…

what are your favorite open source hardware projects using KiCAD that are _not_ by MNT?

"Mozilla is exiting the fediverse." I wish it had taken a more ambitious approach and integrated with the fediverse instead of just running a Mastodon instance for a handful of people - but here we are. #Fediverse werd.io/2024/mozilla-exits-the

I was talking to a teenager and they didn't believe me when I said that text messages used to be used for things other than 6 digit numbers

The cool thing about @cstross's The Laundry Files series is that it posits that magic is a branch of applied computation.

And if you understand how Turing completeness works, that means it's possible to summon Cthulhu by playing Magic the Gathering, or carefully organizing a couple million migrating crabs.

I imagine The Laundry has a reoccurring problem of their techs treating it like the "Can it run Doom?" problem and doing Bad Ideas just to prove it's possible.

Damn, Mozilla.social is going away. Guess they need the hardware to run AI for their browsers

The distressing War On Affordances™ carries on with #macOS 15 #Sequoia. There is nary a button visible to dismiss this modal dialog in the App Store app. You just have to know to…uh…click somewhere in the grayed-out area…I guess…to dismiss it.

Clicking *on* the dialog also dismisses it for some reason? And you can’t select the text in the dialog—dragging in the dialog also dismisses it. Horrendous.

Clicking somewhere other than the grayed-out area (for instance, on the sidebar) does *not* dismiss the dialog. In fact, you can navigate away from the dialog by selecting another entry in the sidebar. In other words, the “dialog” is no longer a modal window overlaying the main window, but a subview of the content view.

The whole thing smells like a React.js web app.

This is distressing. It’s another useless, novice-hostile change, and a further erosion of the macOS HIG.

Scientists have long tried to create synthetic life that mimics the real thing, or crack the code of organismic immortality.

In a new approach, researchers have figured out a way to cultivate cells from dead organisms to create new lifeforms that are unlike the organisms they came from and which are capable of wholly unique functions.

Oh, and they can replicate.

🆕 blog! “Theatre Review: Big Finish *LIVE!* Doctor Who - The Stuff of Legend”
★★★★☆

Big Finish have been pumping out Doctor Who audio dramas for quarter of a century. But this, apparently, is the first time they've recorded one live and in front of an audience. It was glorious! Big Finish could have cheaped out - even with a bare set and a cast o…

Due to circumstances beyond my control, today is Monday.

@Tarah Yeah she really killed that role. I would be honored to be cursed out by her. When I think of The Expanse I think mostly about her, Amos, and Drummer, who had another great arc on that show.

I really really wish that show had gotten a more complete last season. And another 6 more seasons.
