There's a glaring problem with the e-Visa scheme almost by design: accessibility.

To register for an e-Visa, you need a smartphone that can make contactless transactions.

Many migrants, especially older people, don't have these devices or lack the necessary technical literacy.

> #Microsoft confirms that #Windows 11 Recall #AI is not optional — a glitch made it appear so in the Windows 11 24H2 KB5041865 update

But don't worry, the company that is unable to correctly implement a toggle switch assures us that they definitely implemented this new immensely complex piece of technology nobody asked for directly in the operating system in a way that is secure and under no circumstances puts anyone in danger in ways security researchers said it will.

The latest @vkc video is about the lost art of computer manuals:

And I thought "wait, didn't @mntmn's MNT Reform have a great Operator Handbook"? So I went and looked it up, and damn! It's even better than I thought.

Not only does it explain how to charge the laptop and turn it on. It introduces you to Linux, has exploded-view drawings of components, includes schematics and even a bill of materials! Magnificent.

Does anyone know what the word "Togidaere" means?

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 users will not be able to uninstall the controversial “Recall” feature, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. Recall, part of the Copilot+ suite announced in May, automatically captures screenshots of user activity on the operating system including sensitive information such as passwords or financial data digitalmarketreports.com/news/ Do yourself a favor and get rid of Windows from your life—enough of these greedy companies. #privacy #security

Were you ever on Livejournal?

I was <lovecraftienne> for a while, before I got tired of being associated with a racist, and changed it to poeticalpanther.

Boosts welcome.

‘Dynamic ticket pricing’ otherwise known as capitalism on steroids that amounts to deceptive complete fleecing of fans.

How many people actually paid the advertised price of £135 for a standing ticket to see #Oasis? How many were forced into a split moment decision to part with £355 for that same standing ticket by the official ticket seller #Ticketmaster?

#Microsoft Remote Desktop is being rebranded to “Windows App” and I am once again begging Microsoft to reassign the entire team that has named stuff for, like, the past three decades to ANY OTHER PART OF THE COMPANY BESIDES NAMING STUFF

Twitter has been banned in Brazil. One country down, 200 more to go.

Once again a forced change from deb to Snap has at least been part of the problem - this happened with Firefox and Chromium as well. I don't mind using Snaps but the deb to Snap process seems very flakey in my experience.

When it comes to my main PC I'll uninstall the deb and install the Snap instead of using the auto conversion, and before I try upgrading to 24.04.

Hey #Firefox for #Android users, I need your help. We've started rolling out updates for version 130 and it seems that a lot of users with Vivo devices experienced a bunch of crashes. Samsung and Google ones are affected too, but to a lesser extent. If Firefox is crashing for you ping me, I'd love to know exactly what happens at the moment of the crash and right afterwards.

It's not just us that thinks it. This sentiment was reflected in Third Sector Podcast's episode 'Open data for social good, and responding to racism'.

Remember when you could just buy a newspaper for like $1 at a shop?

Imagine if you went to the newsagent and they were like “$25 please”

“Huh? That’s steep”
“Oh that gives you a month of access”
“I don’t want a month of access, i want a newspaper”
“We’ll also flyer your house every day”
“I don’t care, I just want a newspaper. Today’s newspaper”
“You also get access to our other newspapers in other towns”
“I don’t care, I want a newspaper for here, today”
“Oh it’s not just for today. It’s for a month. And three months after”
“Wait, what happens after that, is that it over?”
“LOL of course not. It’s $35 a month after that”
“What? Why?”
“Introductory offer. Also we’ll tell a bunch of other companies where you live and THEY’LL flyer you too”
“Know what, it’s fine, I don’t need a paper”
“I’ll send you a reminder in a week”
“STOP. FFS”

And they wonder why online news makes no money.

my fundamental problem is that I'm passionate about changing a lot of things about the computer industry but all of them are things that would need to be changed back in 1989.

All of you will be happy to know I just got word the QOTO big update that we have all been waiting on (5 versions in a row) that we have been struggling with just succeeded in our beta environment. I havent fully tested it but its up and error free at first glance according to our system admin!

After a little poking around if everything looks sane we should have it applied to the main production environment very soon!
