First time this happened to me... package left under the bush next to my front door. Gave the delivery company a negative review since this is not an action I want to encourage in the future.

@trinsec Were they just doing it to reduce the chance of it being stolen you think?

@freemo They could've delivered at my neighbours? That's always been an option. Or a central deposit I could get it from if need be if re-delivery next day wasn't an option either.

Leaving it behind unattended requires permission. I never gave that.

@trinsec It is probably different depending on the country. In the USA leaving it unattended is the norm except when the person shipping specifies otherwise.

@freemo It is *not* the norm here. Definitely not without permission.

At least this is the first time this has ever happened to me. Maybe it depends on the delivery company, but I'm now less likely to choose this one out of a list.

@trinsec in the netherlands for me UPS would often leave the package unattended without permission but would go out of their way to hide it. for example they would often walk into my backyard and leave it near the backdoor.

That said I had some truly weird interactions. More than once, without permission, the UPS guy just walked into the house and left it on our table while we werent there.

@freemo
Do you leave your house unlocked in the Netherlands?
@trinsec

@rastinza

A lot of times, yes. I lock it when ill be gone long-term though.

@trinsec

@freemo
Wow, this is wonderful! You don't have to worry about locking the house.
@trinsec

@rastinza

To be fair I often dont lock the house when im in the middle of a city in the USA with a high crime rate either :)

The way I see it no one is going around jiggling door handles to rob houses in the middle of the day. If they are going to rob your house they likely just break a window and a door lock isnt much, if any, of a deterrent.

@trinsec

@freemo That might be your experience, but that won't be the case for everybody. I'd keep my front door locked even when I'm at home. (Being deaf is another factor to keep in mind). Though with our front doors you'd need to go through some considerable effort to keep it unlocked as they're all auto-locking, unlike most American front doors I've encountered.

And window breaking isn't common around here. It's a noisy act, you don't want to attract attention like that. Most of our front doors have large windows.

@rastinza

@freemo That said, I just opened my backdoor as it's a gorgeous weather. My backyard is a closed and locked enclosure, so it's unlikely for anyone to just walk in. They'd have to climb the fences at the neighbours first, which is a lot of effort for a simple burglary.

@rastinza

@freemo
Oh no, in Italy people wait for you to leave the house and then force the lock.
Thus, if you don't lock the house you're making their job simpler.
Breaking a window is often not an option, since the noise might alarm people.

Once I have been robbed while I was in the house and I did not notice anything.
@trinsec

@rastinza @freemo Forcing the lock can be hampered fairly easily with anti-burglar strips along the door frame (metal strips that makes it bloody hard to try to wiggle at the lock on the edges).

@trinsec
We have anti burglar doors over here, nobody would use a normal lock for the front door.
Despite that burglaries happen all the time.
Often they drill through the lock
@freemo

@trinsec
Yes, I have no idea how they do it, but I've seen it done.
@freemo

@freemo At least the deliveryperson did place it in a spot where it wasn't immediately seen, so yeah, ok good. But still, permission and all that, yadda yadda.

And I'd be really freaked out if they managed to walk into my house and leave it on my table...

Wtf, don't you lock your stuff when you're going out?!
