#qoto does not work properly guys, all my actual #friends who were trying to find me on #Mastodon said I didn't show up, and when I tried to link to my #followers here to my new #instance, searching for #qoto no-one shows up. Not sure what has happened, but if you see this #toot and want to carry on following me, go to @mandaroza@mastodonapp.uk
https://mastodonapp.uk/@mandaroza and hopefully it will work ok.
@mandaroza @mandaroza@mastodonapp.uk Qoto works fine. It's probably that your friends are on servers who have blocked Qoto. We can't do much about that, and it's something that happens in the Fediverse when it is filled with all independent servers.
This is the very reason Qoto tries not to block any servers because that breaks federation as you and your friends have noticed.
@trinsec absolutely almost no one I know can see me as their servers block qoto, and it is too frustrating being invisible. I do not know why I ended up choosing Qoto, it was too early in the morning, several months ago.... I do not know why other servers block this one though, any ideas?
@mandaroza Yes, that is far from 'not working properly' though, so that's a bit unfair to say.
But I understand the frustration. If your friends' servers block Qoto (there's a little history with this, @freemo has posted about this a few times), and you want to be able to chat with your friends, there are a few options available:
- Either you and/or your friends move to another server that can see the other server so you can communicate with each other.
- You could create a 2nd account to communicate with your friends (this isn't uncommon actually, every instance has their own 'view' of the Fediverse due to the nature of every server deciding for themselves who to block and who not).
You'll have to discuss with your friends what the best course of action would be in your case, and possibly you'll have to either move or create an alt-account somewhere else.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best.
@mandaroza
Well, it's not exactly a secret that there are a group of servers blocking Qoto. I mean, @freemo was pretty vocal about it before the holidays. ;)
The problem is that there are other servers who block Qoto because Qoto doesn't block the same servers as they do... Qoto refuses to join in that childish mentality.
But because of Qoto's no-block stance we also are very reasonably well-connected with the rest of the Fediverse. It just looks like your friends happen to be on those block-happy instances, so that's bad luck.
We provide block lists you can import that achive that for you. No reason you need the server to block on your behalf.
@freemo @mandaroza @trinsec Where are these lists (and instructions for importing them) provided? I don't see them at
If it's up to qoto users to protect themselves (in whatever way they see fit), the tools for doing so should be very easy to find. It might also reassure the admins of other servers.
@freemo @mandaroza @trinsec I would argue for putting it in the "Federating: Silencing & Blocking" section of the about page. As this is easier for new users to find, it does a better job of "providing" the list.
BTW, the end of that section says qoto only silences two servers, but the next section mentions four.
@peterdrake @freemo @trinsec incidentally, how many new users do you get now that QOTO is not listed on the starter page directory for mastodon? I couldn't find it listed yesterday (maybe was not looking thoroughly enough)
Well the numbers are a bit confusing if you look at our user bot because we just spent the last few days deleting a ton of old accounts that look like spam, so it skewed the numbers.
But as of December 24th (which I know that week we didnt do any pruning so the numbers should be complete), at that time we were getting 152 new users per week.
yea 100 - 150 users a week is very respectable.. but before we were delisted the numbers were much higher.
