#qoto does not work properly guys, all my actual #friends who were trying to find me on #Mastodon said I didn't show up, and when I tried to link to my #followers here to my new #instance, searching for #qoto no-one shows up. Not sure what has happened, but if you see this #toot and want to carry on following me, go to @mandaroza@mastodonapp.uk
https://mastodonapp.uk/@mandaroza and hopefully it will work ok.
@mandaroza @mandaroza@mastodonapp.uk Qoto works fine. It's probably that your friends are on servers who have blocked Qoto. We can't do much about that, and it's something that happens in the Fediverse when it is filled with all independent servers.
This is the very reason Qoto tries not to block any servers because that breaks federation as you and your friends have noticed.
@trinsec absolutely almost no one I know can see me as their servers block qoto, and it is too frustrating being invisible. I do not know why I ended up choosing Qoto, it was too early in the morning, several months ago.... I do not know why other servers block this one though, any ideas?
@mandaroza
That's fair. We won't hold it against you if you prefer to be active somewhere else. Some people do want walled gardens without having to go block the nasty stuff by themselves and we understand that.
Again, it's your decision. We can't force you to stay or something. :) All I can do is wishing you good luck on your decision.
**all** servers are blocked by others.. there is nothing to let people know. QOTO is one of the more connected servers in the fediverse. The servers that block us, as said, are usually already highly isolated from the network.
@mandaroza see here for a bit of the history and me talki g about this
We provide block lists you can import that achive that for you. No reason you need the server to block on your behalf.
@freemo @mandaroza @trinsec Where are these lists (and instructions for importing them) provided? I don't see them at
If it's up to qoto users to protect themselves (in whatever way they see fit), the tools for doing so should be very easy to find. It might also reassure the admins of other servers.
@freemo @peterdrake @trinsec Your pinned post doesn’t appear on my phone display when I click on your name, I don’t know where to find it. It may be different on a laptop but I usually use my phone.
Here is the direct link: https://qoto.org/web/statuses/109260056830000449
@freemo @mandaroza @trinsec I would argue for putting it in the "Federating: Silencing & Blocking" section of the about page. As this is easier for new users to find, it does a better job of "providing" the list.
BTW, the end of that section says qoto only silences two servers, but the next section mentions four.
@peterdrake
Good points there. And I'd suggest that we just leave out that last sentence anyway as the list is dynamic.
@peterdrake @freemo @trinsec incidentally, how many new users do you get now that QOTO is not listed on the starter page directory for mastodon? I couldn't find it listed yesterday (maybe was not looking thoroughly enough)
Well the numbers are a bit confusing if you look at our user bot because we just spent the last few days deleting a ton of old accounts that look like spam, so it skewed the numbers.
But as of December 24th (which I know that week we didnt do any pruning so the numbers should be complete), at that time we were getting 152 new users per week.
@freemo @mandaroza @peterdrake
I'd say we dropped from a few thousand new users every week to about a hundred max now.
Still better than pre-twittermigration levels. We have plenty of room for growth.
yea 100 - 150 users a week is very respectable.. but before we were delisted the numbers were much higher.
@mandaroza @trinsec not too many servers block us. Mostly just a few higbly isolated (and in some cases radicalized) servers.
In fact qoto has far more visibility than most servers, much more so than the ones that block us (since they tend to block out most of the fediverse)
@mandaroza
Well, it's not exactly a secret that there are a group of servers blocking Qoto. I mean, @freemo was pretty vocal about it before the holidays. ;)
The problem is that there are other servers who block Qoto because Qoto doesn't block the same servers as they do... Qoto refuses to join in that childish mentality.
But because of Qoto's no-block stance we also are very reasonably well-connected with the rest of the Fediverse. It just looks like your friends happen to be on those block-happy instances, so that's bad luck.
