@freemo@trinsec Thanks for the quick reply. I think the problem arises from non-English written toots using hashtags that I follow.
There is a setting in the preferences "Filter languages When checked, only toots in selected languages will be displayed in public timelines". I do not think this working. I have clicked on just English as @trinsec suggested but I get quiet a few non-English toots.
