This map of all the #fossilfuel infrastructure in Corpus Christi, TX is both insanely detailed and... honestly terrifying.
Since Obama lifted the crude export ban in 2015, Corpus Christi has been the exit point for 60% of U.S. crude exports, much sourced from the Permian.
Map also shows:
-- 6 refineries
-- 9 NGL fractionation plants
-- LNG export terminals
-- 4 ethylene producing steam crackers
-- spaghetti tangle of pipelines

I've talked about this before. It's something that you'll see me bring up over and over again.
If you are feeling aimless, a little depressed, and in need of grounding...
VOLUNTEER.
Find a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, a senior citizen center, a hospice, a charity, somewhere you can be in the service of others.
Something happens to us when we serve others. It takes us out of our heads. It centers us.
It just helps.
Trust me.
VOLUNTEER. Help yourself, by helping others.
@academicchatter I wrote to a variety of people at #universityoftorontoScarborough about this and have heard noth back. The job add is closed now. I hope they nonetheless received lots of great applications from diverse candidates.
We made vanilla sprinkle #icecream #today with the #kitchenaid stand mixer. Blended in gummy bears and then packed it into a round dish to deep freeze into a knock off #marbleslab #icecreamcake. Tomorrow we eat it!
@ChristyCeeCK I'd also like to get those provincial mandate letters opened up. I bet there's a clue or 2 in those.
@ChristyCeeCK I certainly hope they do! #HandsOffTheGreenbelt #onpoli #Greenbelt
Greenbelt: OPP Investigators have begun quietly conducting interviews to determine whether to launch an investigation into the Ford government’s controversial decision to open up parts of Ontario’s Greenbelt for development.

@girls_can Yes, all of this resonates with me. Best of luck.
Researching mines in northern Spain I came across this curious object. It's a canary cage designed to keep the canary alive in the event of a gas leak. If a miner saw the canary laying at the bottom of the cage it was time to abandon everything and leave the mine, but not without first closing the latched glass door and opening the valve of the oxygen bottle to save the bird. A miner would do that on their way out and take the bird with them. It's a signifier of the miner's legendary sense of solidarity, no lives lost to the mine on a miners watch. A solidarity that was also crucial in the fight for workers rights, creating safer and more humane working conditions, achievements of unionization and solidarity that some of us still enjoy today.
I once again reviewed the visualization trends of 2022 in the sciences. (First time posting this on Mastodon).
Enjoy & let's have a conversation!

@girls_can I’m really sorry to hear that. It seems that if you have a large lab and ongoing administrative commitments then sabbatical is still going to be a lot of work. At least that has been the case for me. Being in Australia has helped as I can say no to a lot of meetings because I am sleeping, but then I have just ended up waking up early a lot to take meetings.
@girls_can I had ambitions for a short time to try to write a book during sabbatical, but then reality set in that I had too many commitments to try to pull that off. Maybe I’ll try again when my kids are older.
Probably the best realization for me during sabbatical has been that I like to be busy, but that I don’t need to try to do everything. Everyone has their own right level of being busy with work and figuring that out and trying to maintain at that right level is a challenge.
1/52 Good to see this Guardian Long Read, but as a historical ecologist I would like to add: humans do not just either stay within boundaries or destroy nature. It's often been a positive, dynamic human-nature symbiosis, with humans actively shaping and creating forests & #biodiversity #historicalecology
