A key thing I've learned about Mastodon: When you find people you know and want to keep up with, don't just follow them — add them to a list!
Merely following is not enough, b/c their posts may not show up in your feed at a time you're logged on. Unlike FB or Twitter, Mastodon has no algorithm to resurface your friends' posts from hours or days ago.
So create a list called "Friends" and check it when you're on. This will ensure that you see what they posted while you were away.
Imagine if we relied on “personal responsibility” instead of the law to combat other public health issues like drunk driving. No rules--just “you do you”. If you're comfortable driving drunk and wish to take the risk, go ahead and do it--why worry yourself with harming anyone else?
Wait, that doesn't work? Then why do maskless conferences, flights, and events work at a time when we know #COVID19 risks are rising. Don't take personal responsibility; take public responsibility. #WearAMask
I went to my office #today for the first time in ages and on-boarded our new #technician. It was a chaotic day and tomorrow I will be #teaching in person for the first time since Winter 2018. Bit out of practice. Hoping I’m not too rusty. Watching #MayTree #acapella videos on #youtube and trying not to think about it. 🫣
@girls_can Response might not have been published. No research rabbit but I've played around with other sites like https://inciteful.xyz/ and https://www.connectedpapers.com/
I've seen an author-based (rather than publication-based) network analysis from GWF papers. After $78-million the figures wasn't that insightful 🤷🏽♂️
From @mrcippy on hosting his own instance on a #RaspberryPi:
"After three weeks of having my own #Mastodon server, complete with a custom domain name, I have no regrets. There's something liberating about knowing that I own the entire experience, including all of my data -- and it's all stored in my basement."

#Today we went to the #conservation area and explored the #iceformation - it was #beautiful and also #fun to crack the giant plates of #ice.
Out on the mudflats of the drained reservoir.
Important to appreciate local natural areas.
My latest sale came about because someone had seen an image of mine taken of Tunnels Beach in Kauai and it was his (and his wife's) favorite beach in world and he would like a framed print of it. After a bit of discussion, we decided metal would be best and he ordered a 48-inch-wide metal print of this panorama. #AYearForArt #Kauai #Panorama

Connecting the Dots by Robert Lee
is a MUST READ for any Ontarian that has even once questioned the actions or motives of the Premier - our very own modern day Sheriff of Nottingham.
Robert's writings cover a broad range of questionable DoFo related topics including, but not limited to:
- fudging the Ontario budget
- AG & the OLG audit (it's not what it used to be)
- 7-Eleven bars (& related)
- Convoy, cops, media, greenbelt destruction & backdoor political deals
- etc ...
Ford and his minions are great at implementing plans outside the law or considered a benefit to society at large.
Private prosecution - an interesting concept / solution(?).
"In Ford Nation, there is no accountability. There is no gravitas. Everything is a transaction. The public good never figures into the equation. The great question in Ontario politics is a simple one: How much longer will the people stand for it?"
Please help increase the readership of his insightful views of our current provincial nightmare.
@yaneerbaryam In Vienna (Austria), the city has developed mass PCR tests that later were adopted nationwide in Austria. At peak times, as many as 450 000 PCR tests were evaluated on a single day. At the moment, everyone living in or visiting Vienna can pick up 5 PCR test kits per month. After gargling at home, the probe is handed in at supermarkets. Within 24 hours, the result is received via e-mail. The test kits do not cost any money.
Details on the test programme (in English): https://allesgurgelt.at/en/wien/
The statistic shown in two of the below pictures can be found on the Austrian broadcasting association‘s website (one needs to scroll down quite a bit): https://orf.at/corona/daten/
In the next week, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will release the monthly temperature for December 2022, and giving us further insight into how much more the #ClimateCrisis has heated the only planet in the universe known to support life.
Here's what we know already:
- 2022 will very likely be the 6th hottest year that the earth has seen since we began to burn coal, oil and gas for energy at scale, with the burning of these fossil fuels being the most significant cause of the heating we have seen.
- Only one of the top 20 hottest years occurred before the turn of the century (1998, which is 13th). This means only 3 of the 22 years this century are outside the 20 hottest years. All of three are in the top 25.
- Noting that that 20th Century was itself artificially heated by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, the most recent year that was below the 20th Century was 1974. By that measure, no person under the age of 46 has lived in a below average year.
- The most recent month that was below the 20th Century average for that time of year was December 1984. This means 455 (soon to be confirmed as 456) straight months have been above the 20th Century average. The odds of this streak of warm months happening by chance are absurdly small (1.9 * 10^137 to one). For an indication of scale on that very, very big number, there are around 10^80 atoms in the observable universe.
We can't afford coal, oil and gas in the 21st Century. Fortunately, we have the solutions.
If visualisation is more your speed, here's a heatmap I have made of the global monthly temperature anomaly comparing each month to the average temperature of that month in the 20th Century. 👇
In anticipation of this evening, the Daily Kos proofreaders braced the editorial staff for the technical language that would be necessary in dealing with this event. These are the vital facts that you should know as we prepare for what may, or may not, be the final round of voting.
