At my local library, a little girl dropped her library books into the ‘return’ slot, waved and shouted “GOODBYE BOOKS, HAVE A GOOD DAY AT SCHOOL!” and my heart grew three sizes 🥺

@RandomCanuck Yep. And from everything I've read, the profit margin of private clinics that directly compete with hospital work has historically come from two areas:

- lower pay & especially fewer benefits for staff (in particular non-medical staff like cleaners),
- refusing to serve patients with co-morbidities or complications, who get sent back to the hospital system, which then has a higher average cost per patient for a given type of procedure.

Had a nice visit with Party MPP @mikeschreiner@twitter. He spoke with my about the importance of and , the danger of policy, what is happening to the , and the outsized importance of small, isolated for

As the last rays of sunlight disappeared, the world was bathed in a warm, golden glow, signaling the end of another day. It was a sight that left one in awe, and reminded us of the beauty and transience of life.

RT @SfEP: What are the key issues expected to impact #marine and costal 🌊🏖️ #biodiversity conservation in the near future? 🤔

An expert panel identifies 🔍 the possible issues these #ecosystems could face in the next 5-10 years.

As climate change approaches the point of no return, remember—after September 11, 2001, the FBI declared that environmental activists were enemy #1.

As temperatures soar, remember how politicians passed legislation to protect fossil fuel profiteers.

As hurricanes pummel the coast, remember how the cops swabbed pepper spray into protesters' eyes.

As flash floods destroy towns, remember all the people they brutalized at Standing Rock.

As forests go up in smoke, remember how riot police charged the crowds so they could expand the open-pit mine at Lützerath.

As the polar ice caps melt, remember how prosecutors charged young people with terrorism for trying to protect the environment that we all depend on.

Remember who is responsible.
If not for their violence, we could have dealt with the ones who are driving climate change long ago.

In return for a few dollars, they are forcing the end of the world on us.

Moderna is planning to charge $130 for its COVID vaccine, but the vaccine only costs $2.85 to make.

Meanwhile, over the last two years, the company made over $19 billion in profits off the vaccine.

Folks, this is what corporate greed looks like.

Oh, I forgot to mention...
I've been reading the replies to your initial #Today request post. Great idea, I love reading the responses.

My winter break project was an app to browse and follow academics from many of the lists on the Academics on Mastodon page.

find.sciences.social reads data from the lists, and makes it easy to see profiles and follow academics.

The app doesn't scrape or store any information - it just shows the cdv-files in a new and (I hope) more useful way.

Give it a try.

“The data from 2022 is stark, however you look at it. Whether you view the figures in their raw form, or look at the data as another red line added to the climate stripes, the message is clear. Excess heat is building up across the planet at a rate unprecedented in the history of humanity."

It was "woke" people who ended slavery, ended Jim Crow, passed Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote, passed both Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act plus championed marriage equality. Now you get why the GOP hates people who are woke.

If Elon Musk can afford to lose $200 billion in a single year, he can afford a wealth tax.

There's an interesting new paper in the journal Ecological Economics. The title is:

"Assessing U.S. consumers' carbon footprints reveals outsized impact of the top 1%"

This is from the abstract --

Unsustainable environmental degradation and extreme economic inequality are two of humanity's most pressing challenges. They are intimately linked. Climate-altering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are disproportionately driven by consumption among wealthy and socially privileged groups, yet poorer and socially marginalized peoples face disproportionate climate harms.

What really grabbed me, however, was the chart below, created by Andrew Fanning using data contained in the paper. It clearly illustrates the massive scale of carbon inequality in our modern society.

"The fact that the Ontario government watched our public healthcare system collapse due to underfunding...but set aside public funding just so they could invest in private for-profit healthcare…tells you everything you need to know about their priorities."

Doug Ford carefully said Ontarians would always 'ACCESS' their healthcare with an OHIP card - which leaves the door wide open for Ontarians to always 'PAY' for their healthcare with a credit card.
