Of the 50,000 homes assigned to new Greenbelt parcels, HALF are to go to quadruple-protected #DuffinsRougeAgriculturalPreserve in Pickering! Meanwhile, Seaton, 1 of largest DGAs in Canada, is less than 10% full. https://fb.watch/gXYwyjYVLI/

Over 20 yrs ago, using an exponential decay model, we showed that North American freshwater animals were disappearing 5 times faster than land animals & 3 times faster than coastal marine mammals. We found that North American freshwater ecosystems are losing species at a rate comparable to tropical rainforests (http://redpath-staff.mcgill.ca/ricciardi/Ricciardi&Rasmussen1999.pdf). This received much media attention at the time. The alarm was rung many times since. Yet #freshwater ecosystems are rarely the focus of #conservation campaigns.

Great idea!
In general I am interested in macroecological patterns of biological invasions and the drivers that govern these patterns in space and time.
Mainly working with plants from the #GloNAF database but also other groups are fine.
Lately, I also work on future scenarios of biological invasions in the #AlienScenarios project.
And I also contribute to the @ipbes invasive alien species assessment which will hopefully be adopted next year.
A new report from Stanford argues for changing how we teach science in the face of rampant disinformation. “…the goal of science education must be to make “competent outsiders” of all students.”
Focus should be on how to determine whether a source is credible.

Perhaps instead of chasing Amazon warehouses a company who doesn’t pay taxes and is currently laying off 10,000 we should consider this ⬇️ #StopBill23 https://twitter.com/arkeleno/status/1594393571091972097

One of the world’s longest-running experiments has been going for 143 years!
In 1879, botanist William Beal wanted to find out how long seeds could remain viable underground. So he buried bottles with different kinds of seeds in a secret spot somewhere on the Michigan State University campus, knowing the experiment might outlive him.
It did! Every 20 yrs, a small group scientists still dig up the bottles and seeds continue to germinate 🌱 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/21/science/beal-seeds-experiment.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare #science

It’s time to call for an Integrity investigation into Doug Ford. He promised Ontario he wouldn’t touch the Greenbelt, but was caught on video promising developers that he WOULD open it up for development. Investigative reporting by Emma McIntosh, Noor Javen & Brendan Kennedy reveals developers bought up chunks of Greenbelt on Ford’s promise and now stand to make bank.

There are so many reasons to #SaveOntarioWetlands. Here are 4 simple ones!
#Wetlands store billions of tonnes of #carbon and fight #climatechange - at #COP27 we need to pledge to protect wetlands.
They purify #water and trap pollutants.
They prevent #floods and #erosion
They support endangered species. >30% of #SpeciesAtRisk in southern #Ontario rely on wetlands!
Help us protect them: https://saveontariowetlands.weebly.com/take-action.html
Ok Mastadon, let’s do this! Today #SaveOntarioWetlands launched our website with resources and tools to help you take action and engage your MPPs. Tell them to stop #sprawl, save the #greenbelt and stop #bill23. https://saveontariowetlands.weebly.com/take-action.html
Today I’m remembering how hard we fought to protect #DuffinsCreek #CoastalMarsh on #LakeOntario.
I’m thinking about all the other #WorkhorseWetlands people take for granted in our urban and rural areas. They are working hard to purify #water and prevent #floods, but do we adequately value them?
Today, why not tidy up your local #wetland? Stop 🛑 that litter from becoming #Microplastics or harming #waterfowl. Bring some garbage bags and some friends and do a clean-up. It will feel amazing to actually make something better with your own hands.

In the #GreatLakes region, we’ve already lost >60% of historic #wetlands. Some places have lost up to 90%! Those few remnants of #CoastalMarsh are precious. My ❤️ Is broken to learn that #DuffinsCreek #ProvinciallySignificantWetland was drained illegally. Especially given how much we’re investing to #restore coastal marsh under #GLERI
