I had heard of moths anti-predation tactics before, but hadn't realised that the use of ultrasound was as widespread as this paper shows. Excellent work by the authors 🦋 🔊 🦇

It's very disheartening to see that in the space of a month, the majority of images on my feed went from being described to having not even one sentence as a description. I started ID-ing on tumblr but #Mastodon really encouraged me to make it an actual habit.

Please, if you're able to, add descriptions to the pics you post.

It can’t be that everyone on #mastodon is still #masking. A lot of us are talking about how #CovidIsNotOver and how we are still masking, but surely a lot of people on here are not masking anymore?

I wonder what it’s like to read posts from those of us who are feeling free to be honest about how we feel about people not masking?

This is one of the only places where I talk about my real feelings about it. In my offline life it feels like I’m laying a guilt trip on people if I’m honest.

A decade ago, the oil-funded denial shops were making a big deal out of a “pause” in global warming, claiming “no significant warming since 1998.” I recall a lot of now-deleted blogs and media appearances from the usual suspects pushing the idea that warming was over.

It was a scam at the time, relying on statistical illiteracy, and it seems just silly in hindsight. This animated graph, from Wikipedia, shows why:

🚨 The final report of the Jan 6 Commission is OUT. I thank my colleagues who toiled these last two years to expose what happened. I look forward to digging into this and encourage all Americans to read the report and learn the truth of that dark day.

As the Siberian cold spreads, I'm thinking back to how Russia, more than most countries, has weaponized winter - almost always in defense. So much so that foes spoke of "General Winter" as a leader of Russian forces.

Now, by destroying so much of Ukraine's energy infrastructure in his invasion, Putin is using winter cold as an offensive weapon. #PutinWarCrimes

As Russian forces under Putin's direction repeatedly attack Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, leaving Ukrainians in the cold in the midst of winter, we shouldn't let repetition inure us to the ugly reality: these are war crimes, not legitimate attacks. nytimes.com/202…

I totally understand and accept that many folks are willing to stick it out on the other place, despite the issues, for all sorts of reasons (including the disappointing amount of support they might be finding here for their communities). But at this point, personally I’m way more interested in building better communities here, and in other spaces with similar decentralized structures, then in enduring whatever havoc a hostile CEO decides to unleash at any moment.

We have a huge opportunity to reclaim online culture after 20 years of being shepherded into pens and jolted for our data. The gate is now open, and there are other, more promising options. We shouldn’t let this moment pass.

I'm desperately trying to permanently leave the bird app, but as a freelance journalist, it has also been a crucial tool in getting work

I'm posting my favorite stories from 2022 here with the hopes that I can find community here: (boosts very welcome)

1) My beat in Colombia can get pretty grisly. But this year also brought with a chance for me to focus on peace-building.

This was a fun one: I talked to demobilized guerillas who seek peace through brewing.

Ukraine's survival, Zelensky's triumphant speech - none of this was inevitable. Let's try to imagine what would have happened if the US and Europe had not helped Ukraine, if Russia had occupied the country, if the Ukrainian political class and creative class had been wiped out, if Russian troops were now based along the Polish border. What would the world look like now?

I can’t stop thinking about the Afghan girls Robotic team knows as Afghan Dreamers. The girls with minimal resources were able to design and build low cost ventilators and their expertise were used during Covid crisis. Roya, a member of Afghan dreamers was ranked among Time’s 100 most influential people for her work in building internet classrooms in Afghan high schools.
