@jotaemei @grammargirl as I indicated above I don't think that kind of solution can work. there are too many kinds of people who need verification. It's not just news orgs. It's any public figures. It's governments at all levels, politicians (at all levels including local), scientists, doctors, civil rights activists, particularly in repressive countries etc. whatever the solution it needs to work across all instances or it's not a solution.

It's taken a while to figure out exactly what my problem is...

Twitter is a faceless corporation. I felt free to tweet about anything

I have mathematics I want to toot about and I want to follow many mathematicians. So I chose mathstodon.xyz

But now I don't feel free to toot about, say, the embarrassing incident last week when I accidentally conned Trader Joe's out of a bottle of Bailey's and then rubbed salt into the wound. Feels like I'm wasting the time of very serious mathematicians

@ambihelical @dpiponi this is why I set up an account on qoto and not on xyz. I am a mathematician but I mostly post on general topics. when I do want to post about math I use hashtags. But even qoto feels a bit too specialized when I post about books, music or politics.

If you run a telephone network, on the other hand, your costs go up exponentially as you sign up new subscribers. That's because the infrastructure necessary to connect all these people scales geometrically. To see what I mean, take a look at these stills from "The Far Sound," and old film about the Bell system: 5/

@WalterShaub@journa.host that was excellent! thanks a lot for sharing. please post more links like that, not just names.

Yesterday I had to explain to a non-math undergraduate student what Riemannian geometry is. Surprisingly difficult. I tried to explain curvature in pictures and mentioned as an example that you can't make an accurate map of any region of Earth on a flat sheet of paper because the former is not flat but the latter is. I wonder what examples people use in similar situations.

@freemo yikes. ok, but it doesn't have to be kiwifarms that provides such tool. someone else should make something similar.

@freemo hmm. I don't know what kiwifarms is so can't comment on that part. but in general I feel that that which instances block which should be public info.

@freemo thanks. would still like to see the list if possible. can you perhaps post it on the "about qoto" page? It does list silenced servers.

t.me/United24media/672 🇺🇦🕯 Today in Ukraine is Holodomor Remembrance Day. This is an annual national day of remembrance that falls on the fourth Saturday of November. At 16:00, a nationwide minute of silence is announced, after which the “Light a Candle” action takes place throughout Ukraine. Lighting a candle in their window, Ukrainians pay tribute to the memory of all those killed by the Soviet totalitarian regime in the early 1930s. Holodomor is the (more) #Ukraine #News #War #Russia

Been wondering for a few months now how long it would be before R started cannibalizing the non-essential parts of their strategic force for (conventional) precision missiles, and looks like the answer is "now".

I wonder what will become of Twitter. Will folks stop sharing as much, drift away to other community minded places, like Mastodon?

Will it become a Wild West of awfulness, pushing away all kindness from the site?

Or will it be a pendulum swing, where Elon loses interest and survival brings back a more balanced moderation?

@davemark
>Will it become a Wild West of awfulness, pushing away all kindness from the site?

this is happening to twitter already. and it won't stop even if Musk loses interest. but twitter is unlikely to die from user drain. it's too big, too important and it would take **years** for any competing platform to catch up if any even can. Twitter has structural advantages not easily overcome by any competitor.
I have noticed in the last week is that many people I follow went back to posting on twitter.
and has its own raft of issues to deal with. check this thread for example
sciences.social/@josh/10941052

if# twitter dies it will be because of bankruptcy.

@josh thank you very much for this highly informative thread. I am on a relatively small instance and already seeing several of the issues you are raising becoming serious. in particular it seems several instances are defederating ours over some policy differences. Don't know what's the right way to deal with this but I don't like what is happening.

RT @OlgaNYC1211
Infuriating how Ukrainians are sitting w/o heat, electric, water and Russia carrying out genocide has still not been labeled a terrorist state. How has this not happened yet? How many Ukrainians have to die for the West to cut Russia off completely? So infuriating & heartbreaking

this is a terrific thread on the future of on various issue it will face and is facing already.

I've seen plenty of discussions in recent days over the network structure of Mastodon and whether it can remain decentralized as large commercial players begin taking an interest in the fediverse. I am neither an engineer nor an economist, but I do research the way media and information get distributed and I have some thoughts on this. A thread…

@freemo is there a way to see which instances blocked us?
