digging into the #activityPub documentation and specs, and reading some experience reports implementing it.

i can now report that this part of the internet (the #fediverse) is, like the rest of the internet, held together with scotch-tape, chewing-gum and open-source-developer-hours.

fore example: there are kinda-agreed-upon-heuristics to figure out if a message is private/group-specific blog.dereferenced.org/activity (yes that site's cert is expired, like much the conversation)

@trinsec yeah, but if there's 100 million users on mastodon one day, that's going to be a lot of servers and admins. There will be many busted disks and forgotten bills every year without some organisation to handle. I predict some unstable services and orphaned instances as the fun wears off and admins get busy with other stuff.

@RadiantFlux that's a way to scale, sure. But more decentralised sites will lead to more admins needing to do work. I bet many of them are eager initially, and as life happens their prioritisation of mastodon admin work may fall. There's bound to be some consolidation at some point.

I'm not saying it should/will consolidate to a single site or even very few. I'm just not sure that throwing volunteer admins with homegrown instances at the problem will work well in the long run. I can't imagine all those volunteers still putting in the work 5-10 years down the road.

How will mastodon servers manage the current influx of users over time? Do enough users donate, or will instances charge their users at some point? Are there any advertisement driven instances? Which instances have the most realistic business model?

I was pondering how this is going to fly after further growth, with increasing expenses, when maintenance becomes a chore, and as life happens to instance admins.

I started doing combo #StreetArt + #SciComm to remind folks that science still has beauty and wonder to offer them.

Before Covid19, the news coming out of science was already often bad with climate. Now it’s even worse- to the point that I think many folks brace for impact when scientists come on TV.
“All the crabs are gone!”
“New virus spiking in kids”

Some folks protect themselves from all the bad news by shutting down. I’m trying to repair some of that damage with the #SquidFacts project.

@KonradKohlrabi Kanskje det er for varmt? Evt skal du bare fortsette å mate, starteren kan gå gjennom en stinky-fase før man får selektert riktig bakterieflora. De klarer å lage starter på sommeren i varme land også. 🙂

Jeg laget starter på kjøkkenbenken i januar. Brukte et litt for stort kar (ca 1L, litt høy plastboks med lokk), nå bruker jeg syltetøyglass. Matet på det meste 2x per dag med 50g mel og 50g vann. Blandet sammalt og siktet hvetemel i likt forhold. Brukte helt plain Møllerens mel.

Høres jo ut som du gjør det rett, men om du gidder å høre på hun her så er det dette jeg fulgte. Finnes seff hundrevis av videoer om temaet på nett. Denne serien er ganske lang, men det kommer en del bra info innimellom her. Jeg hadde covid og var i god form, så jeg hadde veldig god tid og hørte på alt sammen. 😅 youtu.be/2zHkWU2g6as

@KonradKohlrabi ja, dette er surdeigsbrød. Alle de små "blemmene" på skorpen er et bra tegn. Jeg får ikke de på gjærbakst, selv om jeg hever like lenge.

Jeg burde selvsagt lagt til både og her, for å øke sjansen for at noen oppdager dette. :)
