@AndytheCorsair In all seriousness, have two WIPs. Procrastinate on the first one with the second, and procrastinate on the second one with the first. This is not as useful if you're working to a deadline, but sometimes all you need is a little variety.
Researchers set up a sting operation by sending a new computer in for a "repair" & only disabling the audio driver so there should be no need for repair techs to access personal data.
After the computers were returned, logging was analyzed to see if the techs tried to snoop...& found snooping at least 50% of the time, especially on women's computers.
@BostonAbrams @SER617 @bikepedantic I know about better.boston, but they're closed for new registrations. That says there's certainly demand for additional regional instances, should anyone decide to spin some up.
@stavvers Bonus -- Tumblr is getting ActivityPub support (eventually), so your audience will be able to follow your Tumblr posts from right here!
@gbhnews Law enforcement robots allowed to use lethal force? Surely, nothing could go wrong with this plan!
@SER617 @bikepedantic Motion for somebody (else) to start setting up regional instances, i.e. - "bostodon.social" and "bostodon.online," or whatever.
One of the wildest features of the #CryptoWipeout is that all of these "multi-billion-dollar" firms never bothered with an independent audit, and they all turned out to be lying about their balance sheets.
Amidst this carnage, it's easy to forget that the Big Four #accounting firms are terrible enablers of #fraud, and the fact that they sign off on your books is no guarantee that you're not a giant scam waiting to implode.

Here's me finally figuring out that I don't have to set up an account on every single instance whose local timeline I want to check out. 🙈
With the increased character limit *and* Markdown support, the native QOTO posting interface is going to be enough for most people, *unless* they're specifically looking for a blogging platform.
I just can't see how throttling back the character limit here in order to force people to use a different platform would be a good thing for anyone *except* that other platform.
Maybe we're just dealing with a bit of a language mismatch here and talking at cross-purposes. If @farooqkz wants to boost Writefreely as a service to use in addition to QOTO, that's fine. If the idea is to cut QOTO's features in order to force people to use Writefreely, that's not fine, unless @freemo decides he wants to go in that direction.
A research team at USC has figured out a way to use genetically engineered fungi to convert polyethylene waste into pharmacologically useful metabolic products.
(This story is great because it features three of my favourite things: reduction of plastic waste, fungi, and drugs, LOL. 😁)

@JonKramer I grew up in a suburb of Rochester, NY, which is on the southern short of Lake Ontario, smack in the middle of the band of totality. I've already informed Mom & Dad that I will be coming for a visit!
@jon I've always been impressed by the German language's evident allergy to run-on sentences. It has retained, instead, a predilection for creating run-on words!
When I turned 70, I thought, “Well, that’s it. I’ve had a great career, but it’s winding down.”
Boy, was I wrong. I found social media, and then a second wind at my sails in my 70s! I made my Broadway debut at 78, and I’ll make my London debut at 85.
Life is truly wonderful and magical.
If you’re in London, come see me in Allegiance starting in January. Tix here: https://allegiancemusical.com
@darnell @aurynn @thomasfuchs It also gave vulnerable people the agency to decide what "safe" looks like for themselves, instead of playing "great white savior," and I respect that. It's also worth pointing out that subscriptions don't appear in the federated timeline, and there is a zero tolerance policy for hate speech, whether expressed or boosted, on the server.
Mastodon: a partial history (DRAFT)
https://privacy.thenexus.today/mastodon-a-partial-history/
As @shengokai says ⬆️, if we want Mastodon's history to matter for the present, we need to look in detail about how and why it was built. Here's my (draft) attempt to do that -- highlighting the amazing contributions of the early community (much of which has never been properly credited) without whitewashing the past.
Feedback and discussion welcome!
@darnell @aurynn @thomasfuchs Members of marginalized and vulnerable communities on QOTO specifically requested the ability to be able to monitor such "hateful" instances that had a history of doxxing and stalking them. Accordingly, the QOTO admin added a feature to the instance that lets users "subscribe" to an account's public-only content without notifying said account of a follow. This has allowed marginalized communities like the LGBTQIA+ community to be able to warn targets when someone on an objectionable instance is planning to launch an attack. It lets them not be sitting ducks who get blindsided by stuff like this.
#Historians I would like to see here, but I’m stuck following them at birdsite:
