Who am I, and why am I here? #introduction

I am a machine learning researcher, using tools from #Bayes, #stats, #optimization, #informationgeometry, #deeplearning, signal processing, etc.

I care deeply about people, their well-being, inclusion, diversity, equity, privacy, and justice.

I believe in slow and rigorous scientific process, to add value to existing knowledge, and improve positive impact on society.

I am here to learn about all of these.

Hi everyone. I’m Jess, a materials scientist working on next-generation optical and electronic devices. I spend all my free time trying to make science more inclusive. For the last four years I’ve spent every evening writing the Wikipedia biographies of scientists from historically excluded groups. I’m nearly at 1800!! #WomenInSTEM

Ok, #introduction time!

I lead a research group where we build computational predictive models to understand biological motor control. Most of my work has been on human locomotion, because it is an ecologically relevant task that is challenging to model. Since starting my group at #MIT our scope has broadened.

Our models are based on theoretical concepts in optimization, control, and learning. We always seek to build models that are empirically grounded, and help us distill simple principles.

My #introduction is overdue. I’m a professor at Penn who studies memory using systems and computational approaches. I’m also writing a book: When it comes to understanding the brain, what are we trying to achieve? What’s our plan to get there? What challenges do we face? #neuroscience #author

Writing has deepened my appreciation for community-based progress. I’m excited to be on this inclusive platform where we can leverage collective intelligence, and work through conceptual blocks together.

I'm a (born Dutch) neuroscientist and very passionate about everything that has to do with brains esp. single neurons and networks. We (try to!) do theory, computation and brain recordings (in several species) in the same lab.

But I am also passionate about electromagnetism, information theory, digital signal processing, statistics, and machine learning.

And most of all playing piano (jazz, blues, classic) and watching the ocean (secretly looking for a job near the beach by the way...).

Will be at 2022

New preprint by Atika Syeda and others in Carsen Stringer’s group. In Carsen’s words:

Neural activity across cortex is high-dimensional and ... complicated. Still, those fine neural features can be predicted from orofacial behaviors in mice!

#Introduction

Hi all 👋 . I am a Ph.D. student at Georgia Tech #GT working on #TimeSeries, #Multimodal #probabilistic prediction, and #uncertainty.

Looking forward to the #mastodon experiment in search of a saner, less #stochastic academic social media experience 🤞 !

Thanks, @thegradient for the initiative.

Just joined sigmoid.social. Thank you to @thegradient for setting up this instance. :-)
#Introduction : I’m interested in AI, esp interpretability, safety, and reasoning. I’m trans, non-binary, queer, poly, kinky, and (probably?) autistic. I’ve worked in AI since 2020 (at OpenAI). Before that, software eng and site reliability for 20ish years. I love SciFI, karaoke, and beer. I care a lot about politics and human rights. I try to always learn open-heartedly from people who are different from me.

Hi all and thanks to @thegradient for setting up this server.

#introduction
I'm in the process of finishing my PhD, where I've been doing research on DL theory and neural solvers for PDEs. During my ongoing internship at MetaAI with @karen_ullrich, I have been working on diffusion models and neural compression.

Like so many people on here, I'm an unpaid volunteer.

If you appreciate this account, or my site fedi.tips, or my other sites fedi.directory and growyourown.services, or my accounts at @FediFollows and @FediVideos and @homegrown ...

You can buy me a coffee at:

You don't need to register, all currencies work.

Alternatively you can become a patron at:

Thank you! :blobheartcat:

asking again if we have settled on a hashtag for ppl volunteering to do person-to-person help for new fedis? would be useful to have somewhere to point people but also so other ppl who have been here awhile could mute it. I had initially guessed at #FediGuide but idk.

Okay this might be a long post :blob_grinning_sweat:

One thing that I realised is making harder for people to switch is because the whole concept can feel daunting & overwhelming for non-tech savvy people.

With Twitter to them it was straight forward and easy to find topics they enjoy but with mastodon its a bit different.
So if you're new to mastodon or you want to introduce someone to mastodon here are some tips, useful sites & tools:
### Tips:
- Choosing a home instance isn't as importance as it seems, don't overthink it. Yes moderation rules & policies may differ but they all have one thing in common: Be a decent human. You **always** have the option to migrate your account to a new instance.
- Toots (or posts if you think toots are cringe :sad_cat:) are what we call micro-blogging instead of tweets
- You’re supposed to "boost" AKA "reblog" toots that you like.Since Mastodon does not have an algorithm that surfaces toots that have been liked a lot, boosting is the best way to help spread stuff that you like, and to show appreciation. (credit to @orsvarn for this comment)
- Another way to fill your timeline with content you enjoy is to: Find other people with similar interests, follow them, favourite their posts, boost their posts, use hashtags. rinse, repeat. (credit to @garry)
- If you ever feel yourself getting sucked into arguments on the , you might want to take advantage of the instance mute/block feature!
Instances tend to foster a culture, so if you find people from a specific site tend to be bothering you, muting/blocking that instance will keep other members of that community from bothering you as well.
- Finally do not share private/sensitive information via DMs on Mastodon. Direct Messages are not E2E. **Keep it in mind**

### Useful tools & resources:
[Twitodon](twitodon.com/) - Find your Twitter friends on Mastodon
[FediFinder](fedifinder.glitch.me/)- Similar to Twitodon
[Fedi Tips](fedi.tips/) - an informal, unofficial guide for non-technical people who want to use Mastodon and the wider Fediverse
[Fedi Directory](fedi.directory) - A human-curated small selection of accounts to spice up your timeline.
[Trunk](communitywiki.org/trunk) -Trunk allows you to mass-follow a bunch of people in order to get started with Mastodon or any other platform on the Fediverse
[Fediverse.info](fediverse.info/explore/people) -growing list of people and topics can help you discover mutual interests with people around the world
**Mobile Apps:**
[Metatext for iOS :apple_inc:](apps.apple.com/us/app/metatext)
[Tusky for Android :android:](play.google.com/store/apps/det)

Lastly if you are interested in setting up your own instance you can learn via learnfoss.org/ its completely free and its made by the wonderful @stux

I apologize for the long post lol, just hope this helps anyones transition over :ablobsmilehappy:

Quick #introduction!

I'm a researcher working on problems to do with deep learning and proteins at Microsoft Research New England. You'll see me post about interesting papers, pictures of food, and whatever else I'm interested in at the moment.

Book review: I recommend "The Sea of Tranquility" by Emily St. John Mandel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_of_T. I loved the characters and the feeling of tranquil disconnection throughout the book. I read about half of it while camping, sitting in my comfy backpacking chair with this view, which is how I recommend you read it :). I would guess that fans of more character-driven, literary sci-fi would appreciate this more than hard-core sci-fi fans. I didn't really care for the sci-fi story as much as the little vignettes in the lives of individual characters, maybe similar to the early sections of "Cloud Atlas".

I'm a #neuroscientist in Singapore using #zebrafish to understand appetite control and gut-brain signaling pathways. Check out my lab at www.carolineweelab.com. My other hobbies are hanging out with my two cats, rock climbing, and swimming, but the former is to me wayyy more fun than the latter two :blobcat_pat: New to this app and still rather confused, but happy to try out something new!
