Just finished reading: An African American and Latinx History of the United States by Paul Ortiz (2018)

This book draws from the voices and experiences of people from the African and Latinx Diasporas in the Americas to offer a new interpretation of United States history from the American Revolution to the present. As well as the Haitian Revolution, the Mexican War of Independence, and racial capitalism.

this #FlashFicFriday I offer up Andrea Saenz's "Everyone’s Abuelo Can’t Have Ridden With Pancho Villa," which makes me WEEP every time I read it.

I found it in the anthology SUDDEN FICTION LATINO, edited by Robert Shapard, James Thomas, and Ray Gonzales, plus a knockout introduction by Luisa Valenzuela. Highly recommend.

Latinx in Data Science

Do you identify as #Latinx and work on the fields of #statistics #MachineLearning #DataScience ?

Please consider adding yourself to this database: latinxinstat.wid.wisc.edu/

We are hoping to build a community of #LatinxInStat #LatinxInDataSci, but also, we hope that conference organizers can use this database to include a more diverse #representation of speakers.

If you are a journalist who cares about social justice and the power of journalism to help create a better future, you should watch this. Juan González is the most important, yet lesser known, Latino journalist of the past 40 years. Students in my classes have read Juan's books, Harvest of Empire and News for All.

RIP Twitter moments. Something else to archive… Allegedly existing “Moments” will be preserved, but I wouldn’t bank on that… :-( #MediaLit #EduTooter #Twitter #TwitterDumpsterFire Source: twitter.com/TwitterSupport/sta

I am part of the great #twittermigration and joined about a month ago. 🤗 Been getting my head around tooting and boosting. So here is my intro (folllowed #fedtips). I like to talk about #science #chemistry #leadership and #diversity. I am an advocate for #womeninstem. I am not based in Scotland but it is close to my heart as somewhere I lived for some years. Plus I live nearby! #Cumbria. I am hoping more of my bird community will move across. So any tips on how to help them welcomed. Thanks!

My interview with a #solar thermo#chemistry pioneer in #solarfuels made me realize that real world #innovation (as opposed to designing apps, for example) that requires #engineering, #chemistry and #physics can take a couple decades and the work of many #STEM researchers.

But getting aviation #CO2 #emissions to zero is necessary to a future #climate we can inhabit. This year, it got noticed.

The very first meme I made on Mastodon and if I do say so myself, it’s aged pretty well. #elonmusk #twittermigration #twitter

Some of you may have seen Elon Musk's endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s crazy antivax conspiracy theories today.

Over at post.news, I just posted a long-form piece about this, and about how science education needs to adapt to online disinformation.

Please a look. If you like it, boost it there or here or — if you dare — over on the birdsite.

“Why do you want to talk about this stuff,” Joanne asked…”We can’t do anything about it.” “We have to.” “Have to what?…What can we do?”
“We can get ready… Get ready for what’s going to happen, get ready to survive it, get ready to make a life afterward. Get focused on arranging to survive so that we can do more than just get batted around by crazy people, desperate people, thugs, and leaders who don’t know what they’re doing!”

I've decided to shift my social media focus to Mastodon, and so this is my #introduction.
I lead Microsoft Research and new product/business incubations that emerge from our research projects.

I'm pleased to be here and am looking forward to this fresh start with all of you.

I get a lot of questions about my research so I’ve decided to host a substack (newsletter) focused solely on that.

“Unelected Representative” is about the people we don’t see in Congress responsible for decisions about science issues shaping our lives. It will weave together new research with theory + insight from senior R & D staff.

Why? Publishing in journals alone limits access. This will let us discuss ideas more widely.

As usual history has erased the truth. It was #JoanMastodon, not #JohnMastodon. She is the one who de-extincted the giant woolly beasts of the great plains using DNA culled from a single tooth! Joan rode upon the back of the greatest tooter of them all to San Francisco, where a herd of ancient Pleistocene mammals defeated the Bad Car Man! Long live Joan! Long live Mastadonity!

@MrFarland Have you tried using the gamethinking framework (Amy Jo Kim's work)? It works great for me to keep the big picture without getting lost in the wees!

@MrFarland Here's an example of how I use it. Simply a high level framework in the form of user stories throughout a product lifecycle.

#introduction
Hello! My name is Laurence Timms. I'm a father of two nearly-grown-ups and a very happy husband.

I have direct experience of #neurodiversity and #mentalhealth issues. I know a bit about #autism and #ocd.

I love #running and #parkrun.

I'm an #agile coach, helping software teams work better together and making that work more sustainable. I used to be a software engineer.

I've done a bit of #writing (fiction, film).

My pronouns are he/him. I'm learning how to be an #ally .

I loved the little Twitter home I carved out over the years. It made it quick and easy to consume information about issues I'm interested in, but I appreciated the occasional banter about trivial bullshit, too. That said, I've never been afraid of starting over or building new communities, so here we are. I just need to build up some healthy chatter around traffic and weather in #austintexas, strategies for ending #homelessness, ways to manage #parkinsons, and tips for how not to kill teenagers.
