I lost the cat, looked around for a bit and found him in the trash. He was probably scared of being so close to the dogs.

I am sure everyone has their own story to reach the point where they face it, but you will find things to motivate yourself. Though keep in mind there is no job security in the software field, and it is a cut-throat market; for businesses, employees, and everyone. And this risk and sacrifice, people working in the technical field must bear to do their work.

But my observations have been that; these layoffs, firing etc., have an overall positive impact on individuals and society. When it happens, these people in comfortable positions get challenged, which they cannot dodge, and the outcome is always better.

I am sure you will do great things with time in your case too. You will remember this event as a recalibration time, as I do.

Let me know if I can do anything for anyone; best of luck to you all!

In the second year of my professional career, I got a final offer from a semi-government insurance agency to join a permanent role with all the benefits for life. I had a very troubling 2-3 weeks. I was confused and challenging my old vows. I finally decided to pursue a career in the #software field and moved on.

So a year later, when I faced firing for the first time in the software field, again, I had to go through a hell of a time for a few days. Again, I questioned myself -- but this time, I had a different question. I was not questioning my decision to come to the field but other things.

I knew that if I needed job security, I would have been an insurance agent's supervisor and solved different problems, but that's not why I am here. Instead, I am here to do something different and change the world more significantly. And job security is something I get to sacrifice to be in this field -- kept me #positive, out of grudges and negativity.

That first firing even taught me to keep evaluating my position every quarter and decide to move from my job if my work is not making more impact or if I am not happy with flexibility and finances. And I moved on a couple of times.

It is depressing to read all these #layoff related posts here. I feel sad, and it is obvious to feel sad after reading dozens in a single day.

I can directly relate to and feel the situation as I have also been there. I have been fired or laid off a couple of times by now. But there is always a first time -- which makes us question our ability, strength and whatnot.

The first night it happened to me, I recalled the year I completed my master's degree, and I had two choices -- choose to go to the #IT field and work with private companies or go to government job preparation.

I took the first choice and decided to move into the IT sector. However, both of the fields were at boom. I was a confident boy and had already cleared a few written exams for government #job #exams -- so that choice could have got me a secure job, and that life that most of my friends were looking for, and many of them are doing now.

Does outdoor/background/ambient* city* noise* bother you?
That is,
it actually gives you discomfort*
versus
you don't mind.

AND do you live/commute/work in a very busy, densely-populated area? You know, like #MetroManila #Beijing #NewYorkCity versus* #Stockholm #Copenhagen other cozy European cities.

👉 yes the noise bothers you, yes in a loud city
👉 yes to noise, not in a loud city
👉 no the noise is not bothersome, yes loud city
👉 no to noise, not in loud city

The airport WiFi network gives you 30min of free WiFi. Write a Linux command line to change your ethernet address randomly every 30 minutes. Bonus points if it also automatically requests a new DHCP lease.

Excited to announce that I'll be starting as an Assistant Professor of Law and Computer Science at Northeastern University School of Law and at Khoury College in July. Thrilled to be welcome as part of such incredible communities and grateful to my mentors and friends for all their support over the last several months.

Hi people, I'm a slow mover and adopter. Here for lurking mainly. Might upload a picture at some point. Follow me so I can follow you back friends!

I'm remote teaching a #Linux performance and tuning course for some system administrators in Germany.

I share my terminal so the students can see the commands I'm typing for examples and such. When we take a break, I'll give them a time frame, then execute the following script in my terminal:

$ i=$((15*60)); while [[ $i -gt 0 ]]; do clear; echo $i | figlet; sleep 1; i=$(($i-1)); done

This is a large countdown timer in seconds. Screenshot attached with 419 seconds remaining.

I wanted to take a few moments and apologize to many of my former students.

In the past I said the industry needs people who look at security as a vocation and an avocation.

I was wrong.

Have a life outside of this industry.

Have hobbies that have nothing to do with your computer.

Get outside.

The problems of the industry are not problems of people not working hard enough.

They are not problems of people not being "hard core" enough.

They are problems of education and resource prioritization.

I was wrong.

I am sorry.

Stop breaking yourself on rocks for people who don't really care if you break yourself on rocks.

Hi, I'm Brian. I hack on software and hardware.

I've been writing operating systems for a living for 20-odd years now: BeOS at Be, HiptopOS at Danger, Android at Android and then at Google, Fuchsia/Zircon at Google, LK here and there, various toy and experimental systems from time to time.

I grew up with the C64 in the early 80s and worry a lot about modern platforms being too closed and restrictive.

I am a fan of sci-fi and fantasy written, televised, animated, and gamed.
