Hey! An update. I've actually made such a Bioinformatics-centered server (see the message I'm replying to!). You can join here: https://discord.com/invite/arPBahn8N6
Boosts are very welcome, even if you're not interested. Thank you!
I'm going to re-tag this: #bioinformatics #discord #algorithm #datascience #tools #r #python #genomics #transcriptomics #multiomics #lab #collaboration #academia #computerscience #biology #science
Hey are you an #RStats user on Windows? Have you ever been frustrated you can't copy and paste the path to files and folders into an R string without getting an error about escaped characters?
THE ANSWER:
Put the letter r right before the opening quote for the string to disable "character constants" and turn it into a "string literal". Like this
myPath = r"c:\MyDir"
See the letter r chilling there, OUTSIDE the quote? That's the magic trick.

@jens2go that's really cool! Reminds me of the classic experiment by De Mairan

Asked by a Twitter friend to repost this timelapse of my sweet chocolate pepper plant moving at night.
I was surprised by how much all my plants moved at night, completely dark room (except for camera IR taking photos) no air flow from heaters etc to make it move involuntarily.

@krita wow, it's almost like Stallman was right all along, when he warned decades ago, that proprietary software can and will spy on its users.
And everyone were saying "that's crazy talk, why would anyone want to spy on MY stuff???".
If you work with #scRNAseq, you should have a look at tidyseurat https://github.com/stemangiola/tidyseurat
It creates an invisible layer that enables viewing the Seurat object as a tidyverse tibble, and provides Seurat-compatible dplyr, tidyr, ggplot & plotly functions

Compromised PyTorch-nightly dependency chain between December 25th and December 30th, 2022.
Steals all your SSH keys!
"If you installed PyTorch-nightly on Linux via pip between December 25, 2022 and December 30, 2022, please uninstall it and torchtriton immediately, and use the latest nightly binaries (newer than Dec 30th 2022)."

I cannot keep this to myself. There is a website (radio.garden) where you can listen to radio stations all over the world for free. No log in. No email address. Nothing.
When the site loads, you are looking at the globe. Slide the little white circle over the green dots (each green dot is a radio station) until you find one you like.
I have been listening to this station in the Netherlands and it absolutely slaps. I have no idea what they're saying but the music is fantastic.
Happy to share our new article, which has been in the making for a veeery long time!

In this study we looked at the control of the entrance of #ghrelin in the #brain
Ghrelin is a #hormone produced by the stomach, which induces hunger. In order to do so, ghrelin needs to enter the brain, to reach neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the #hypothalamus, a region of the brain important for many #endocrine responses.
Here, we explore the role of cells lining the capillaries (such as #perycytes ) at the median eminence, which is on of the "doors" of the brain, where molecules from the periphery are allowed to get in.
We used a mouse model where pericytes can be electrically excited via #optogenetics to study the dynamics of ghrelin entrance in the brain. When we excited pericytes, there was a slow-down of blood flow at the median eminence, resulting in slower entrance of ghrelin, lower and delayed food intake in response to ghrelin injection.
This shows pericytes as a potential therapeutical target for metabolic diseases.
Use Mastodon 🐘 on desktop? I made a Chrome extension (works in Edge, Safari & Firefox coming soon!) to make following people, favoriting, bookmarking & boosting toots on remote instances easy as your home instance! (1-click)!
🙌 Appreciate the boosts! 🙌

@ChristosArgyrop Thank you so much for the tip! I will definitely try that when back from holidays (no alignments allowed at Christmas! 😀 )

How did I miss this conference?
---
#NormConf is the tech conference about all the stuff that matters in data and machine learning, but doesn't get the spotlight.
---
Topics include:
- How small can I get that Docker container?
- What's the simplest possible thing that might work, and why didn't you try that first?
- Data ethics: the non-sexy parts
The good thing: all videos are available 🤓
The thing about #depression is it can take away all joy in life.
Things you once loved, whether it's art, projects, cooking/food, etc. It can sap you of motivation, take the fun out of activities, and really make things generally more difficult.
These can also be indicators that you're depressed.
If you like the idea of using #RStats {targets} 📦 for reproducible data analysis, updating only things that need to be updated, and keeping yourself organized; but have struggled how to use it within a data analysis, I have a blog post that might help you.
In the post, I show how I work through an example lipidomics analysis using {targets}, that should be generally applicable to many, many data analyses, even non-omics.

@kabalak @lgatto Not sure if there are proper analyses, however there are tools around like this https://mlco2.github.io/impact/#compute which might give you an idea.
Senior lecturer at Edinburgh University and Zhejiang-Edinburgh Joint Institute (ZJE).

I teach #imageanalysis & #dataanalysis with #RStats & #python.
My research is focused on how #heterogeneous behaviour in #pituitary (and other) cells shapes their function as a population.
I'm also very interested in #reproducibility and #openscience.
