Plaque: Mastodon Thousands of years ago, mammoths, ground sloths, bison, horses, camels, and giant mastodons, like this sculpture of "Dean", a juvenile mastodon, roamed the Willamette, Tualatin, and Yamhill River Valleys. Upon extinction, the bodies of may of these prehistoric animals where buried in the area's swamps and riverbeds. Long-time resident, John "Bobby" George, first began to wonder about these creatures when he asked former Tualatin Marshall Charlie Roberts about a mastodon molar that Charlie was using as a doorstop. Years later, Bobby learned that in the late 1800s, farmers had found mastodon bones in the Tualatin swamps. As a curious, Portland State University dental student, Bobby declared that he was going to "dig up a mastodon" as an assignment for a geology class. He asked Charlie to show him where the mastodon molar had been found. Bobby's ambition paid off. With the help of some friends, he uncovered half of the mastodon skeleton and a tusk from the Tualatin swamps. This sculpture is dedicated to the men and women of Oregon who teach. Thank you, for inspiring wonder and curiosity in us all and for urging us on the new discoveries.
