Well it definitely isn’t pretty but these are the first test beads from my very first attempt at arc welding. The one on the left was the first, which isn’t completely horrible but it got worse after that.
Definitely a learning curve, but unlike my Prime Minister, I didn’t go blind and as a bonus didn’t set fire to anything either. #welding

Something is happening on the backside of the lathe headstock!

The Schaublin 102 we got has a threaded spindle nose onto which the chuck backplate is screwed. To loosen this again you need to prevent the spindle from rotating while leveraging on the chuck. Previous owner of the machine used the dividing plate hidden in the headstock for this - which is brass and not made to withstand these forces, and also very hard to get to if it breaks. So I'm designing and fitting an outboard spindle lock.
