@m0bi13 Jak ten ociekacz się trzyma kupy? Jest lutowany czy spawany punktowo, czy może jakoś jeszcze inaczej?
@whitequark The best way to mislead is to say carefully selected true things.
@drmaddkap You might have meant pipeless :)
@danluu I wonder how often they're trying to say something like "this language has undesired property foo, which is a consequence of fundamental choices that are hard to change, so if it becomes popular we will sadly make foo more common".
Reposting some tweets I wrote on June 26th, 2021 about Myst:
Technically, this script on the first card of the Myst stack that players get to interact with is a spoiler for the game's ending:
Not logged in people are not allowed to search the code in a repository anymore.
Fuck you #Microsoft #GitHub
Do you know if it's easy to enact a default-but-overrideable blocklist or mutelist in vanilla Mastodon?
@delroth I guess you mean security critical software that handles untrusted input. Otherwise, there's lots of security critical things written in bash: for one, ~all service startup scripts.
@GWillow I've seen and heard trustworthy secondhand reports of similar situations as far back as one decade ago (the one i most vividly remember was a post about police brutality that mentioned threats the police made that was removed "because it contained threats addressed at another person"). I suspected that this is a result of some very surface-level pattern matching by underpaid moderators triggered by a report from a troll.
@niconiconi what exactly do you mean by control overhead? The literal flops/iops/memory bw spent to decide whether to terminate the loop, or something like branch mispredictions in the same, or something totally different?
ADSL works over wet string? Now, what about "ADSL over a UNPLUGGED phone line"? During a building-wide copper to fiber upgrade, the phone company stupidly unplugged my phone line from the distribution box. the phone was completely dead, no voltage. But my ADSL modem could complete the handshake. Speed degraded to ~128 Kbps, but I could still read basic webpages or chat on IRC... Apparently the parasitic capacitance on the line was enough for the AC signal to jump across the gap. My best guess was that only the ground wire was lost, and the parasitic capacitance of the modem's isolation transformer could complete the circuit via the mains powerline.

Where can I read something about that aspect?
Looks like @coprolite9000 found the answer.
It's atmospheric chromatic dispersion.
https://cseligman.com/text/sky/atmosphericdispersion.htm
This makes sense:
1) regular chromatic aberration due to camera optiics would be the same color on both sides of the bright object, hence my surprise at this image
2) I didn't mention it, but the moon was only a couple of degrees above the horizon when I took this shot.
(In fact, it was bright orange but the auto light balance screwed up and I didn't color-correct before posting.)
@eta I wonder whether it's due to a ww2 bomb.
@m0bi13 Zawsze było dla mnie trochę śmiesznym/ciekawym[^], że taki wzmacniacz używa indukcyjności głośnika jako fragmentu dolnoprzepustowego filtru na wyjściu.

How would you compare the actual access (not the processes that make it easier/harder) with pre-Internet situation (and maybe also pre-ubiquitous-phones situation)?
@delroth ISNIC is both a registry and only registrar for .is. It's run ttbomk by the icelandic government.
I enjoy things around information theory (and data compression), complexity theory (and cryptography), read hard scifi, currently work on weird ML (we'll see how it goes), am somewhat literal minded and have approximate knowledge of random things. I like when statements have truth values, and when things can be described simply (which is not exactly the same as shortly) and yet have interesting properties.
I live in the largest city of Switzerland (and yet have cow and sheep pastures and a swimmable lake within a few hundred meters of my place :)). I speak Polish, English, German, and can understand simple Swiss German and French.
If in doubt, please err on the side of being direct with me. I very much appreciate when people tell me that I'm being inaccurate. I think that satisfying people's curiosity is the most important thing I could be doing (and usually enjoy doing it). I am normally terse in my writing and would appreciate requests to verbosify.
I appreciate it if my grammar or style is corrected (in any of the languages I use here).
