Oh, browsers...
I used to use chrome, but they managed to screw them up by removing the ab blocking ability, which I heavily relied on to prevent YouTube from slapping a series of ads in my face.
Now I switched to Firefox, and despite security issues, the performance is not great too, and not all extensions I use support it.
And I tried Brave today. After seeing the built-in crypto wallet, I uninstalled it immediately. Although it can block youtube ads out of the box, that's impressive.
I want to go back to the good old days, when nobody, literally nobody, wants to know everything about you and your data, and nobody wants to slap ads in your face.
So... A decentralised system rely on a central directory service. Well, freemo has already shamed the joinmastodon part. I'll give a app dev 101:
Build your own instances list and host them on aws or github repo or somewhere reliable. Now you won't screw up if third party service goes wrong.
Or, like fedilab, just ask user about their instance url, LOL.
If you can't include everything, then you either put a warning label and a TextInput, or you include nothing. Don't pretend you have done everything.

As I said, moderators are not your dad or mom. You need to learn things like report and block and filters, which will makes you and the instance better.
Nobody must serve you a clean/best/whatever you want instance. I mean, everyone should contribute towards it.
It's just doesn't make sense (or maybe it's 2am midnight and my brain stopped working). It's, like I said, you nuked a whole area which killed thousands people just for several bad guys. Why?
(Oh, and in case you wonder, my sensible side has already slept. Now it's the chaos side speaking.😈)

@quantumsensing The long and short of it is that we take a stance where the safety of the lives of our LGBTQ community is our top priority. We implemented feature (subscribe) and federation policies that allow our LGBTQ to safely monitor bad-actor accounts for doxxing and calls to violence without exposing their identities. This allows them to disseminate this information to their community to keep themselves safe... Gargron felt this was a bad look for his empire as it exposes new users to the fact that there are bad people on his network at all. As such he removed us from their official directory and refuses to engage in a conversation about it.
He posts this, but still no mention of our situation or any attempt to have a conversation on it... shameful.. seems he looks after his own ass, his own server, but really dont give a rats ass about when it hurts other instances.
Well my tweet calling out joinmastodon is at 122 retoots... I wonder at what point will be enough for them to care....
Trigger warning. I don't suggest you read it if you want a nice day.
When I was young, there is no smartphones or laptops, or networks. Only several kids play and chat with together happily on the street. They don't give a sh*t about what happened in the world, or who started a war (Iraq War), or what virus we have to deal with (SARS), or who is being discriminated/against (US bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade).
The kids don't care, they don't have to. And I was one of them.
Today with the internet, I spend hours on it and I see people being discriminated, persecuted, starved, and eventually killed or suicide. While I also see good things on the internet, like beautiful pictures of Japan, cute anime girls, great tech news that saves people's lives, and a lot of other good things, which makes me love this world. It is those bad things that contribute to sadness and last way longer than those good things.
Several days ago, I saw a news report that a 4-month-old baby died because the baby didn't get to the hospital in time, because of the stupid covid policy in China. The news included a picture of the baby, it's an average cute human baby. I quickly scroll up as soon as I see it, but I can't wipe it out of my mind because of maybe 2 seconds of eye contact with that photo. And today I saw a trans suicide on her birthday after overdosing and having sex and then possibly regretted it. I don't know what's going on and I don't want to know, for my own mental health (and as you see, it's far from stable).
The internet gives humans a great boost in their ability to observe the world, while it didn't change much for people to influence the world. Of course, I don't want to see people dead/suffer, but what can I do? I'm a Chinese unemployed CS bachelor currently self-isolating because of covid related risks, writing Minecraft mod at home and the game keeps crashing because of my goddamn code. And I can't speak English well even with the help of Google translate and Grammarly.
I hope the future me can have some ability to influence the world, or even better, I can help to fix it. But now, I'm nobody and I have no idea how to fix the broken world/people. I'm going to wait and hope.

Yesterday, I saw Chinese people on Weibo accusing Iran players didn't sing their national anthem. They said something about the stupid national honor things. And they interpreted a photo of an Iran woman crying as she heard her national anthem, while the truth is the woman saw those players fighting against the persecution.
Those stupid assholes. And they're the majority of China. F*ck. (Technically, they aren't. But there are so many people like them and eventually they formed a mainstream-ish voice.)
The British version:
1XX - I'm sorry, would you mind waiting?
2XX - So sorry for keeping you waiting
3XX - Deeply sorry, but I don’t think I can help you
4XX - Dreadfully sorry, but I think you may be mistaken
5XX - Terribly sorry, this is so embarrassing
A battery filled with algae is somehow managing to power this computer for months: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2319584-computer-powered-by-colony-of-blue-green-algae-has-run-for-six-months/
No-one's quite sure what's going on. Possibly the algae is serving as the medium catalyzing the interaction between the anode and cathode in the battery.
Except research shows the anode isn't degrading, which suggests ...
... the *algae* is producing the electrons.
Some thoughts on this in my blog post here, item 6: https://clivethompson.medium.com/lavaforming-ai-writes-heavy-metal-and-drones-that-deliver-hamburger-helper-59b9bcfda9a8
**I have a job now!**
I'm a Chinese shitizen, but I generally don't post in Chinese to avoid being suffering from other Chinese.
I'm physically a male, but I don't care how people think about my gender. I can be male, or female, or cat. But if you ask, I'd prefer to be referred to as male. Also, I support LGBT+ people, and I'm a copyleft. I don't think I'm too aggressive in arguing things, but sometimes I do. You should handle it with care.
I post about programming (most time is Java and Kotlin, unless I have a new love), and some random things I find interesting. I also post about my mental health, which is in a stable state of instability, thanks to my parents and Chinese society.
Anyway, if you want to follow me, I'm glad to see you. And, have a nice day.
