A #dog #bakery in #Madrid today.
I have said with pride that I can’t be offended, that I’m immune to that.
I’m still not offended by the existence of “dog bakeries” — but it gets close to that.
I don’t blame specifically the shop owners (who detected a market need) or the clients (who are vulnerable to whims, curiosity and overindulgence, like anyone who cares for another creature). I blame us all, collectively, for creating a society and a moral code that enables this and doesn’t give a second thought to the logic (or lack thereof) behind this.
Our priorities are so skewed. Our allocation of resources, empathy and attention is zero-sum. We neglect unthinkable quantities of suffering afflicting billions of sentient beings every day but pay for a spoiled caniche to eat a cute cupcake.
#Book shortlist at the local #library today:
T. S. Elliot’s The Waste Land
Albert Camus’ The Plague
Warren Ellis’ Transmetropolitan
I ended up borrowing the last one.
#ChatGPT just answered a burning question of mine that two human pharmacists could not answer. Yipee!

I’m getting rid of these three #OReilly beauties, 😢 one of them by @rauschma. They are all good, but I bought them in Tokyo eight years ago, which means they were written nine or ten years ago, and this kind of #books don’t age well, for obvious reasons. Farewell and may your pulp become other books!
~7 km, ~40’ beautiful steep #run to my brother-in-law’s #vineyards and back. Snack: delicious #grapes ripe for harvest!
Explain to me again why I should care about “the news” when #news #media have a vested interest in pushing my buttons, their analyses are so biased, and their priorities so skewed.
About #priorities, case in point: today, major #newspapers in 🇪🇸 #Spain imply that by far the most important #news (as measured by real estate occupied on their front pages) is
what one person
who is the head of a federation of
one sport
in one country
says at a press conference about
one incident.
That incident was not a crime. That person is not an influential leader or thinker. There is no international conflict involved. Nobody died, or is going to die, or is going to survive, depending on the outcome of this.
“But this is horrible! Thank God at least it’s only for #men!”
“Many people like eating #meat, but most are reluctant to harm things that have minds. […] This dissonance motivates people to deny minds to animals. […] Animals considered appropriate for human consumption are ascribed diminished mental capacities. […] Meat eaters are motivated to deny minds to food animals when they are reminded of the link between meat and #AnimalSuffering.”
Just imagine you were used since childhood to eating (puppies of) farmed dogs, cats, dolphins and monkeys. Animals crammed into dark little places, maimed and overfed for the minimum number of days necessary for their meat to be economically viable. Imagine that everyone around you had done so for as long as you can remember. And imagine people kept cute shrimp, hens, goats and sheep as pets, giving them names, taking them to the vet, buying food and toys for them, etc.
Can you see the issue now? Are you willing to break out of that cognitive dissonance?
