Gargoyle 2023.1 is out today. (Gargoyle is an interpreter for the Z-machine, Glulx, TADS, and a fairly ridiculous number of other platforms.)

Today I heard people very seriously speaking about “reading literacy” and “writing literacy.”

And, hm, I, just, so, hm

This morning, in the session on «Digital Literacy», chaired by @hickstro, I'll talk about the Swiss Process-Product Corpus of Student Writing Development (SPPC). That's a project I started as a fellowship, and it's still in the making

Some people fell down conspiratorial rabbit holes with Bing Chat that they 100% believed; I did not cite many specifics to prevent copycats, but it was a big eye-opener

An AI model doesn’t have to be AGI to be dangerous. It just has to convince people to do dangerous things

#receptiogate, more attention from Swiss media (You have to register to read the article, but it is definitely worth it: interesting new details!)

Honestly surprised that none of the social media threading systems have decided to clone the email innovation of top-posting and exponentially quoting the entire thread in every reply. That's just great. So great.

A quaint relic from someone's .signature file in 90s:

> Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
>> Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
>>> Top-posting.
>>>> What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?

This evening, in a business meeting of a society, some strange statements have been made:

(1) Someone said, the society has been up and running for 15 years now.
(What? That's pretty long, isn't it? So it exists since, I don't know, the late 1990s?)

(2) She also referred to 2008 as the founding year.
(Yeah, I remember that! This was like 5 years ago, right?)

So, somehow, it doesn't add up:
It has been 5 years since 2008, right? But we're in 2023, not in 2013? Did I just lose 10 years? How old am I?

Good news for #intfic fans. Mainframe #Zork can now be compiled and run from source code. Coming soon here:

#Abstract writing for #conference's is hard - I myself went through enough pains learning it. I've reviewed quite a number of abstracts in 2023 already, and many suffer from the same problem which reminds me of my early days:

Many abstracts use up a whole lot of space laying down theory, but don't give a clear problem statement and reveal little to nothing about data or methods. It's true that not everything can be said in 500 words or so, but if you make use of a clear structure, ... (1/2)

#Pandoc in #scholarly #publishing workflows: @egonw published the summary of a two year pilot that introduced the possibility to augment citations with semantic information.
The article includes links to the documentation and the relevant software, with pandoc (and #Lua filters) taking a central role in the latter.

Shift Happens is nearing $600K and after talking to the printer, we figured out a way to set a stretch goal of $700K, meeting which would allow us to make the third volume slightly larger, but most importantly, to make it full-color!!!

Read the update here and tell your friends! A full-color third volume on the same great paper would be so much fun. (There would also be a great update to the Gorton font, also.)
