@peterdrake @ezpy that’s unfortunate—I wish we didn’t federate with those instances. Sounds like I might want to migrate too.
@peterdrake do they ban qoto.org or something?
This pretty much sums up what I was saying earlier. 😅
I'm a software engineer who builds and maintains one of the components which powers Mastodon: @sidekiq
Outside of work, I'm mostly concerned about our democracy, environment and climate change. I'm a massive fan of two wheels and own multiple #ebikes and an e-motorcycle. I spend my time advocating for safer streets and denser #housing. #bancars
I'm an investor in https://bikeportland.org.
I also love my wife, boy, cat and #dadjokes.
@trinsec I'd rather not. 😁 Bill Gates was also pretty hated in the 90s. Not defending either of them, it's just a pattern I've noticed—billionaires do shitty things and then use their money to rehabilitate their image later.
@trinsec Google still owns the most popular browser today, and yet many compatibility issues have been resolved by adopting standards. I can build a website and be relatively confident that it will be the same experience on Chrome and Firefox.
@trinsec I do think education is great btw. The world can always use more education!
@trinsec perhaps, my thinking on this isn't fully formed. This Mac vs. desktop Linux example is relevant, though. Linux is successful despite the fact that most people don't want to use it day-to-day. People who stick with Mac are paying for the UX, support, and integration. https://qoto.org/web/statuses/109269726202092831
@trinsec the best of both worlds might be if Twitter and other corporate platforms supported ActivityPub.
@trinsec that's true and I might even be OK with that, but I'm not the target audience if you want to federation to go mainstream.
@mperham Mastodon vs. corporate social media has always felt like Mac vs Linux to me. Linux has a lot going for it too, but most people don't want to use it if they can use a Mac instead.
@neglesaks they are young for that now but I think that would be fun someday. Also I'm sure they will roll their eyes so hard when I want to watch The X-Files with them. 😂
@trinsec yeah, you're probably right. It's run by some questionable hacktivist guy. I've seen a lot of Twitter normies create accounts there recently.
@freemo I also can't find Mastodon.social/qoto.org users from the CS side. Seems like something is broken. 🤷♂️ https://qoto.org/web/statuses/109264423892702284
So it seems like Counter Social is not federating, or something is broken. CS doesn't find accounts on other Mastodon servers for me—I tried mastodon.social and qoto.org. I *can* find CS users from Mastodon, but following doesn't work. Anyone know what's going on there? Nbd, just curious because I thought it was compatible.
@freemo that could be the case, not sure how to find out for sure.
@freemo I know that’s how it *should* work, but as an example, I tried following a public account I own on counter.social. It says pending on Qoto, but there is no way to approve on counter, and I never made the profile private.
