I agree, if the name of the instance can be shared and why there are concerns, we can click, and select block from the menu, then the power is in the hands of end users.
Fedi is a community we need to work together, hopefully all these instances that promote x activity, can keep going but they just end up talking to each other.
@ChemBob @zleap @freemo @trinsec @boris_steipe it is a horrible reality of life that sometimes all options suck. I am glad to see this discussion and to have the power of choice among the user base rather than by fiat behind closed doors, or worse announced based on false information.
If the radical get even more radical, whatever the reason, let them be punished under the full extent of the law for criminal actions they commit.

I contacted my colleague over at scholars.social and she was not even aware that not everyone was seeing her posts.
Is there a way to know how large the various instances are? I see we are 26,000 – but neither mastodon.social nor scholars.socials seem to be posting their numbers on the about page.
(Also I was surprised that not everyone has the same generous length limits as we do! Makes me feel so special What would I even do with 500 characters????)
mastodon.social has around 158000 active users.
scholar.social has 872 active users.
qoto.org has around 3000 active users.
Usually you can find the numbers on their login page.
500 characters is indeed the default for most unmodified mastodon instances.
158000 active users seems impressive, until you're actually on there. The local timeline goes by SO fast and there's no specific theme so it's just all random white noise that might as well be the Federated timeline. :)
@zleap @freemo @trinsec @boris_steipe Them talking together is how they get caught up in self reinforcing loops that radicalize them further, convince themselves of their righteousness, and organize to take malicious actions.
