What they are building with #elk reminds me a lot of the early days of Twitter before they killed off third party apps.
If you don't remember or weren't around, for the first 5 years or so of Twitter, 3rd party apps flourished and was a big part of the appeal of using Twitter. People did all sorts of things from regular clients to unique views of the data (StockTwits was originally built on top of Twitter).
Eventually they decided that 3rd party clients got in the way of their advertising plans and they essentially killed off the entire ecosystem. They played it down like they were only limiting certain types of apps, but what happened is that no one wanted to build on top of an unstable platform anymore, and didn't.
If I have to think back to where Twitter started changing for the worse, it was that moment. All downhill from there.
But here on Mastodon there's a chance to revive the creativity and competitiveness that was lost at that time. I'm excited for what #elk is building and look forward to seeing how it inspires others to build unique experiences on top of the fediverse.
People use google as they are unaware of alternatives or are so tried in to google it is hard to leave.
I am trying to download documents for a coding contest, rather long winded, on next cloud I can share a folder and you can just download ALL of the contents.
The contest organisers in their wisdom created a google doc, with links to other documents that all need to be downloaded, very frustrating when I am used to a better way of doing things.

Indeed, we are seeing similar in the UK where people in the six richest country in the world have to choose between heating and eating, people are still being subject to no fault evictions (despite promises to make that illegal)
Education is certainly the key here, but who comes up with what is taught in schools, ?
@zleap unfortunately, in my opinion, the dominant capitalist practices, systemic corruption, and momentum in the wrong directions, combined with the crushing lack of useful education in the US means it's not going to be remediated without massive civil unrest.

I am white, however I really hope that Mastodon and the fediverse can be both a force for good and a force for change not just in the US but elsewhere too.
@Jaden2 the history of gun control is borne out of racism. The realities affecting the black community on either side of the reality of gun violence is often ignored.
The hard truth is we need America to repair the damage it continues to inflict on black people. The poverty caused by that reality makes us dependent on a system we have little representation in. Keeping us as an afterthought.

@lightweight So basically there is little going back, or forward to a better way of getting the US to see the world.
"The June paper said cloud technologies mitigated many of the risks, but exponentially increased the number of software applications schools were using and created other problems.
'The increasing use of data-driven learning insights and adaptive learning applications is vastly increasing the amount of student data being held in such systems, and many hold data offshore, not necessarily subject to NZ jurisdictional protections'."
Yes, this is totally unacceptable: https://masto.ai/@rbreich/109541948219045987 The US federal gov't rules a failed empire and is a moral vacuum.
How many people in the US are actually aware this is happening or understand that every $$ that goes on military spending is $ less on public services and helping people.

I am from the Uk and watched some the hearing earlier today, Given Jan 6th is a taste of what Trumps followers are capable of given a chance, there must be some serious concerns should Donald Trump be arrested or summoned to stand trial before the DOJ. What could this lead to in terms of more violence. Trump doesn't strike as someone that won't go down without a fight.
Must be worrying for many people across the US as to what may be coming.
I saw an article on Click (BBC TV) about chatGPT, sure it wrote a passage of text, however it just wrote the text, surely you would have to cite where you got your information from, even if writing in your own words, you may look something up and from a variety of sources.
Who knows what will happen with Twitter and Mastodon, but the fact that *so* many people, including influential journalists, have had a peek into what decentralized social media can look like & do is huge and has transformative potential, especially in terms of countering Nazis.
Which raise the question as to what he has actually achieved vs his intention? other than the destruction of a social media platform turning it from somewhere millions of people were happy to be into something that got so toxic they left in large nummbers also a place where talented and loyal staff were, but were then stabbed in the back when sacked.
Problem for anyone who takes over is that you won't get those people back but will still need to meet legal obligations for Moderating content or dealing with abuse for example.
